The city of Salamanca has a long historical background while playing a central character in all the significant events in the history of Spain.

You can find a pre-Roman history in Teso de Vicente which is located at the side of Tormes River, in Verraco which is located at the middle in the Roman Bridge and around the streets and walls of the city at many places. Salamanca was ruled by Hannibal, Visigothics, Christians, Muslims and again Christians multiple times.

Alfonso IX in the year 1200 founded the building which is now known as the University in the city of Salamanca, so the credit for the development and prosperity goes to King Alfonso IX. It was in 1254, when this university was known to be one among the four leading institutions in the entire world.

Salamanca went through a period of confrontation during the 15th century as it was already happening in the entire Spain. The city was divided into 2 parts by the supporters of Aragon and Alvaro Luna and it was 1465 when the city went through a furious bloodshed on account of some violent incident.

Catholic Queen and King visited the city of Salamanca many times on various occasions. Salamanca city supported Felipe V in the Succession War during the 17th century. It was 1710, when the authorities agreed upon the decision of constructing the main Square called Plaza Mayor.

There are many sightseeing places worth visiting in Malaga. The harbor to begin with is very intricately constructed and will leave you mesmerized. Another place of visit is the cathedral of Malaga with a peculiar construction style. It’s built of limestone and was built in 1528 by two people namely Diego Siloe and Pedro Lopez. The building’s construction work has not yet been completed and is standing on a mosque. The construction activities were hindered mainly due to financial crisis and still it is incomplete. Spain people call the building as manquita meaning missing relating to the tower which is still not finished in the cathedral.

Salamanca city went through some real bad times during the war of Peninsula. This war greatly destructed many important places in the city. At the end of this war Napoleon got defeated but the war left a lot of destruction in the city. Number of great places like colleges, buildings, palaces and monuments like Colegio Mayor Cuenca which was known to be master piece of architect, were destroyed.

The city of Salamanca has a history rich in the subject of Arts. You will find many monuments with Plateresque Spanish Styles. Number of great artists like Cervantes, Antonio Nebrija, San Juan, Ballester and many other have treasured the city with great landmarks both in the field of university and Arts.

Today, Salamanca city is among those cities of Spain which have a rich history in the field of Arts and the university. People of the city gather at the famous main square called Plaza Mayor and it adds a lot of colours in the festivity of Salamanca.
