As you prepare to move house, you will need to give some thought to hiring a removal firm. Each removal firm may be a bit different because they have different personnel and have a different office or business culture. Some are family owned moving companies and others are large corporate movers. Then there are international movers who specialize in moving house to a location in another country. Some of the international movers also have local arms that conduct local or intrastate moves.
If you are going to have a local move you may decide to look for a local smaller firm that can make the move for you. Just remember if you must move on a specific day such as the last day that you paid rent, then you should be aware of the fact that if the small firm only has one moving vehicle and something happens to it and it breaks down, you may be stuck trying to find another firm to move you as soon as possible. This last minute move may end up costing you a lot of money especially if you are not out of your place in time.
If you use a local mover then make sure they have a backup vehicle they can use if necessary. It does not have to be their own vehicle but perhaps one they can use that belongs to another firm who they have this sort of arrangement with.
Even if you would like to use a local firm you still should get at least two bids from separate moving companies. This way you can chose the lowest price move. If you do not have a lot of household goods you could even hire a man and a van. This may be a lower cost alternative and it would be just as effective as using a larger removal firm. There are many individuals with vans that are in the business of moving smaller households efficiently.
Whichever type of removal firm you choose you should get some referrals and investigate what the firm’s reputation is. You can do this in several ways. If they belong to a local business bureau you can check with them. They may have to have a license in the city that they do business in so you could check with the local government offices to see if they have had any complaints. Of course you can ask for references. If they have been in business for a long time you will be able to find out about their track record.
When you finally hire a moving company you should get a signed contract with them. After all you are entrusting all of your household goods to them to move. A verbal agreement really is not binding as a contract. You want to make sure they have insurance on their vehicle and on their workers so if someone does get hurt you are not responsible. This is just good business and most businesses appreciate good business practices.
