When we started our careers, many of us believed that if we worked hard and were dedicated to the company, our efforts would not only be recognized, but would be rewarded as well. We soon found our positive attitudes dwindling away as we got stuck in a rut, got no raises, no mental stimulation, and saw no prospects for improvement of the situation. A lot of businesses promised a raise and in place of it, removed the guaranteed benefits plan because of decreasing profits. People who used to have steady automotive, finance, or publishing jobs suddenly were left with nothing. So the time is right to wise up and plan on a fresh career path.
A lot of factors could contribute to the desire to seek out new job opportunities at any age. Surveys indicate that the top reason that people change careers is corporate downsizing or restructuring. Fifty-four percent of those who change careers cite this as the reason for doing so. Other reasons that are frequently given for quitting a job include not enough challenge, leadership that is ineffective or a poor relationship with the boss, accepting a better offer with a company paying a higher salary and better benefits, instability of a company, and moving to a different area.
Evaluating your objective is the initial stage in switching a career. You may want to consider taking a self-assessment test to determine your preferences and inner strengths and weaknesses. Myer-Briggs Personality Test, the Motivational Appraisal of Personal Potential (MAPP) Test, and the Keirsey Temperament Sorter are a few of the more popular ones. If you are searching for new employment that will be more rewarding, be certain to think about the activities you like the most, your favorite school courses, and the locations that bring you back to life.
A big obstacle to get over when you are switching career paths is actually yourself. While many people are not happy in their current positions, it takes lots of courage, motivation and determination to look for a satisfying, new position. If you are not successful at first, you feel the pain of rejection and it is easy to get frustrated and discouraged. The main thing is simply to continue trying and don't quit. Network with others in your field, go to seminars, improve your skills by taking classes online or at a local college, challenge yourself, understand what you like and dislike, and look into only the job alternatives that will give you the most self-fulfillment.
