As researchers have always mentioned that men suffering from heart related ailments have a higher probability of acquiring Erectile Dysfunction and their sexual life being jeopardized. This has proved to be right most of the times. Heart diseases are certainly linked to erectile dysfunction.
But here is some bad news for those men who have already undergone a heart implant, as a recent study has found that Adults with congenital heart disease and implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) often have a high level of fear and anxiety about the device delivering a shock during sex -- resulting in sexual performance problems, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions, 2011.

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a small device that's placed in the chest or abdomen. Physicians use the device to help treat irregular and abnormal heartbeats called arrhythmias. An ICD uses electrical pulses or shocks to help control life-threatening arrhythmias, especially those that can cause lead to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly stops beating. If the heart stops beating, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs. SCA usually causes death if it's not treated within minutes. An ICD works on battery that monitors the heart beat. If any sort of abnormal or irregular heart beat is detected by the device, then it automatically delivers a shock to restore normal rhythm of the heart. Though this device comes as a savior for the patient, but the shock which is delivered by the device while fixing the heart beat is quite painful. The effect of this shock would be the same when compared to a kick on your chest. So this did not work well with patients as they were afraid of these shock impulses.

The shock which this device generates had a negative affect when these men were performing sex and during this phase, men lost their erection and were not able to regain it for a quite a long time. To confirm such condition, a survey was carried out among 151 participants. Among the 151 study participants, 41 had an ICD. The average age was 37 for those with an ICD and 32 for those without. Women comprised 41 percent of those with an ICD and 49 percent of those without the device. In this survey, the participants were asked to rate their sexual function, level of depression and, for those with ICDs, their level of fear and anxiety about experiencing an ICD shock.

In the survey questionnaire, survey included questions about confidence, satisfaction and the ability to maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. The women's questionnaire included questions based on interest, arousal, satisfaction and pain during sex. When the survey was analyzed according to the groups, men with ICD’s reported an average sexual function but they also reported mild condition of erectile dysfunction, but the men without ICD’s reported absolutely normal sexual function. Women with and without ICDs had similar sexual function scores. However, men and women with ICDs who had a high level of fear about getting shocked had lower sexual function scores. So the motive of the survey was achieved as it was confirmed that men with ICD’s are certainly prone to Erectile Dysfunction.

It is suggested that patients and doctors should talk about these concerns to help patients cope up with the increased anxiety surrounding the ICD and refer them for appropriate counseling. Oral medications have also been of great help to the patients with ICD’s and who report conditions of erectile dysfunction. Generic Viagra, Silagra, caverta and Sildenafil citrate tablets are considered to be very safe and effective in such patients. These oral medicines are now easily available through online pharmacies which have made situations much easier for the patients.
