It’s a busy Tuesday, after a hectic first half, two colleagues meet in the lunch area of their office. Mahesh has resigned from his post as he has got another opportunity and his colleague Puneet has heard about it. The following conversation takes place over lunch -

“Hey Mahesh, I heard you resigned.” said Puneet “I am glad you made it through the selection for this job you really wanted.” He smiled and congratulated him. Mahesh gently shook hands with Puneet “Thank you so much, I am thrilled about the new position I will be joining at. It has more responsibilities and a big team to work with.”

Puneet gave an impressed smile and said “So what are all the benefits this new place is offering you? You know that just a good package is not all these days.” Mahesh nodded and replied, “Yes, I am aware. They have facilities that are same as here, except for the health insurance. But I guess is don’t need that.”

Puneet looked surprised at this carefree nature of his friend. “Why do you think you don’t need a health insurance?” Mahesh shrugged and replied, “I feel I am pretty young to get hospitalized for any serious illness. Also if any emergency arises I guess I can handle it. Besides, what can I do if the company has no policy of employee health insurance? You can’t leave a life time opportunity for petty things like this.”

“I am not asking you to leave the opportunity; it’s just that your negligence towards your security bothers me as a friend.” replied Puneet in a calm manner. Then he explained, “We know life is getting unpredictable today. With the hectic lifestyle we have, life threatening diseases are just at the doorstep. Sudden hospitalization can drill a big hole in your pocket. You say you are capable of handling such emergencies but, isn’t it better to have a health cover that pays for you and keeps your money safe in the reserves?” Mahesh grew thoughtful at this point.

While he was pondering over the talk, Puneet kept pursuing him, “The increasing cost of hospitalization and the other expenses related to it could make it really difficult for you to cope with daily life after your savings are spent. If this company does not offer you a health insurance why don’t you opt for an Individual Health Insurance or even better a Family Health Insurance. ” At this Mahesh looked up as though his friend had given an excellent idea, “That sounds like a really good idea. I wonder why I never thought of it like that. A Family health insurance will only make life more comfortable. By paying small amounts on regular basis I can easily avail an insurance to pay for treatments when need be.”

“Not only that, health cover is an excellent way of availing tax benefits. Under the Income Tax Policy of India an individual is entitled to tax benefits and can save on tax payable if he holds a health cover policy. So you get a complete cover for health and tax savings with one investment” explained Puneet further.

“Thanks Puneet, I am really glad I had this talk with you. I will immediately research on the best policy I can invest in. Thank you once again.” said Mahesh with gratitude. “You don’t need to thank me for this. I am glad you have taken this decision.” replied Puneet with a smile.
