The invention of various bio-products has helped mankind in several ways. The use of fertilizers and insecticides has helped to grow crops and plants in unsuitable conditions as well. But, these chemicals have taken a toll on the environment. When the chemical fertilizers are used in large quantities in fields, they pose a deadly threat to the environment. HAZMAT is the term which is used to describe these harmful items. With the increasing use of these chemicals in field as well as in factories, all around the world, the governing body of every country is coming up with different hazardous materials management programs.
In the hazardous materials management program, all the harmful items are classified into nine categories. They are oxidizers, explosives, radioactive, gases, corrosive, liquid flammables and combustibles, poison, solid flammables and combustibles, miscellaneous and dangerous. Along with these, bio waste also comes under HAZMAT items. These can include scabs resulting from polio shots and blood waste, used needles, etc. Every country around the globe handles and transports these harmful chemicals. Thus, extra care should be taken at the time of transporting these items. That is because , even the slightest mistake may lead to a mishap resulting in threats to the environment.
In order to make the identification of these HAZMAT items easier, a color code and a number code are given to indicate hazard types. Blue color for health hazards, red color for flame hazards and white color for special types of hazards. The hazardous materials management program also includes assigning numbers to hazardous elements indicating the degree of hazard from 0 being the lowest to 4 being the highest. To raise awareness about these harmful chemicals, safety measures seminars are held all around the world. In these seminars, the individuals who deal with these hazardous materials are given some guidelines about what kind of garments to wear, how to handle such materials, etc. Protective garments mostly include aprons, coveralls, jumpsuits, face shields, respirators gloves and boots.
For the safety of the individuals who handle these harmful items, the hazardous materials management program is combined with training sessions as well. There are three types of training – IMDG, IATA and 49 CFR. The IMDG training is for those individuals who work for international ocean shipments, the IATA training is for international air shipments and 49 CFR training is for domestic rail, truck, barge, ocean and air shipments. Along with these, a HAZMAT professional also gives the shippers information about packing, marking labeling and other procedures involved with the shipping of these harmful items.
The IMDG stands for International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code that establishes shipping requirements for hazardous materials via ocean. Among other training programs, IMDG training is very important. The training session lasts for two to three days and covers all the IMDG packaging, marketing and labeling. The professionals also help the shippers how to fill out the IMO HAZMAT declaration. IATA stands for International Air Transport Association and it provides guidelines for shipping hazards materials by air. This training session is carried out for 3 days when the individuals are made aware of the IATA regulations concerning the transportation of these hazardous materials. Along with these two training sessions, the 49 CFR specifies hazardous materials management for truck, rail and barge modes of transport. Thus, these hazardous management programs have helped the shippers to handle the harmful items with all possible safety measures.
