Every year, between December and May, nature lovers and ocean life enthusiasts flock to Hawaii to watch Humpback whales and other Pacific marine mammals in action, above the surface and below. If you’re someone who is adventurous and fun loving, then Hawaii is the perfect location to visit during these peak whale-watching months. Most people have only seen whales on TV or photographs - perhaps an aquarium that houses smaller species - and seeing the creatures in their true living color, full size and natural habitat could be a truly eye-opening and exceptional experience!

During the mating season, more than 1500 to 2500 whales migrate to the warm waters around the Hawaiian islands to breed, calve and nurse their young offspring. As they go about with courtship, feeding and reproduction, whales will often perform acrobatic breaches and side splashes - special moments you’ll never forget in your lifetime.

Interested in going whale watching during your Hawaii family vacation? The following tips will help you get the most out of your experience!

Plan to perfection:

Visiting Hawaii during the mating season is the best way to watch the adventurous antics of whales. They migrate throughout the Pacific during the year, and they stay around Hawaii predominantly in the months of December to March/April. Planning your vacation around that time will ensure many chances to see the creatures up close - or from your balcony at our Resort.

Choose the best destination:

Hawaii, including the Big Island where our resort is located, is in an ideal position for whale watching. During other times of the year, the whales migrate north towards Alaska or south towards Australia and the myriad islands of Indonesia. However, for someone from the U.S. mainland, Hawaii is truly the ideal location for whale-watching, both in terms of climate and accessibility.

Arrange a boat tour:

As we mentioned, you can actually see whales play around in the ocean even from the "lanai" of your resort room; but if you want to get closer and see the whales in their natural habitat, you can do this by going on a boat tour. Whales are curious creatures and once they see a boatload of people trying to get a peek at them, they will, as often as not, try to reciprocate and get closer. Sounds fun, right?

Of course, there are some rules to be followed as whales are extremely large creatures, the splashes and waves they create can seriously shake up a boat and douse the unsuspecting watcher in a salty cascade.

If you're interested in whale watching and are considering a Hawaii getaway, come to the Royal Kona Resort site and book your Hawaii whale watching vacation today!
