There has been some huge news coming out of the Google camp as of late. The one that has everyone talking these days is the recent announcement regarding Google Plus, a social network the internet giant has apparently had in the works for some time now. With the platform still being a beta project only accessible to lucky testers who received an invite, it has yet to have any impact on the search game. However, SEO managers will be happy to know that this interesting project has potential that could have implications from search to social and beyond.
Search and Social Union Complete
Back in March of this year, Google launched its +1 button, a feature that instantly drew comparisons to the immensely popular Facebook Like button. Google Plus appears to be
the missing piece of the puzzle, the ever so important bridge that enables online search and social to act as one. For a while now, we have been hearing about the company’s ambitions to merge these two properties, and the answer to that harmonic union could very well lie in this new social network. With recent updates allowing activity from +1 clicks and other social actions to be tracked in Google Analytics and Google Webmasters expected to be integrated, SEO managers may soon have a way to measure their performance in and outside of the platform.
Targeted Social Engagement
Google Plus is similar to other social networks in many ways, but separates itself with its approach to the “friends” concept. The site thrives on a component known as Circles, a feature that allows you to target the interactions you have with your audience. For example, if you have an interesting blog post to share, you can make sure that only your customers and prospects see the post rather than family and friends who may not be interested. Google Plus lets you group your network or “circle” of contacts by criteria such as friends, family, co-workers, and others that you customize yourself. This feature has a lot of potential when it comes to targeting your communications as well as tracking your performance.
Mobile Appeal to Boot
Another factor that could make Google Plus an attractive option for marketers in general is its mobile compatibility. The upcoming social network is said to be arriving on mobile platforms in the near future, to no surprise, starting with the Android platform. We have learned that Google Plus will be launched in the form of an app that allows users to connect to features such as Circles, multimedia tools, and the built-in content discovery system Sparks. Being accessible to smartphone users will likely draw attention from marketers looking to tap into the fast growing mobile crowd.
There is no official word on when Google Plus will be officially launched to the public. For now, the beta version is being sampled on an invitation-only basis. Quite a few would-be testers have already been turned away due to all the applications submitted as a result of mere intrigue. While Google Plus isn’t guaranteed to reach the level of Facebook, it would still be wise for SEO managers to keep an eye on this one and develop their strategies accordingly.
