Halloween in Austin is a busy time of year. There is so much going on in the city during the last few weeks of October, it can be hard to keep up with everything.

This time of year truly brings out one of the city’s mottoes – Keep Austin Weird! Weird, scary and spooky is the name of the game in Austin during Halloween. Here are some of the best places to find Halloween fun.

-Sixth Street (downtown)

On Halloween night, normally busy Sixth Street is even more active during Halloween. On Halloween night, the side streets are closed down early to make way for pedestrian traffic. People in costumes fill the streets to enjoy the Halloween party, which normally results in a crowd of more than 100,000. The bars and restaurants are all open and there is lots of live entertainment. Visiting Sixth Street is free, but be sure to get there early.

-Wild Basin’s Haunted Trails

Wild Basin is a beautiful nature preserve for eleven months out of the year, but during October it becomes a spooky tour through a graveyard setting. This event is limited to ages 13 and up, and teens between 13 and 16 have to be accompanied by an adult. The total hike is 60 to 90 minutes, so be sure to wear your walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Live ghoul performers and other spooky decorations will meet you along the trail. The price ranges between $25 and $40 for tickets.

-Mansion of Terror

Located in the Northcross Mall on West Anderson Lane has two different haunted tours to scare and delight you. A haunted wax museum and other creepy locales are on the tour of two different scary journeys. You can choose one to tour or go for both for a discounted price. There’s a $15 charge for one attraction and $20 if you opt for both.

-House of Torment

Right behind the Highland Mall is this haunted house for ages 13 and up. The zombies in this house come at you from all direction. It recently expanded to two different ghost tours and has a single admission for $14.99 and both tours for $19.99. This year the two themes are “House of Torment: Rise of the Abominations” and “Illusion Manor: The Phantasm Curse.”

-Austin Ghost Tours

Did you know there are over 40 haunted sites in Austin? Why go for people in costumes when you can meet the real thing? Austin Ghost Tours operates year round but it really shines during October. There is a special Halloween tour, in addition to their regular tours. Tours start at 7:30 pm, 8:00 pm, 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm each night from the Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill.
