When premium brand Jaguar Land Rover was taken over by Tata of India, famous for producing the world’s cheapest car, in mid 2008 many in the Auto world thought the British brand was done for. Three years later and profit and sales are up by a quarter. So, what have Tata done right? Well, many agree that the launch of the new Range Rover Evoque has had a major impact.
Set to become the biggest selling Land Rover model, the Evoque is aimed at a new generation of Range Rover buyers to rival BMW’s X1 and Audi’s Q3. The Evoque, the smallest ever Range Rover, has opened the company up to a whole new, largely female, audience. Although still big, it’s surprisingly agile and appeals to a younger, more urban market. While the X1 has been criticised for its ugly appearance and limited suspension, the Evoque is sure to turn heads wherever it goes, and although it has limited off-road ability, Land Rover’s engineers have managed to create a rewarding car to drive.
Two engines are available: a 2.2-litre turbodiesel with 148bhp or 187bhp, and a 237bhp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit, with prices starting at £27,955. While the petrol version is smoother, lighter and more powerful than the diesel, it’s much more demanding on the wallet with a combined consumption of 32.5mpg and 199g/km of CO2 emissions. The diesel is more economical with a combined consumption of 49.6mpg and Band F 149g/km of CO2 emissions.
So things look to be improving for Jaguar Land Rover, and the launch of the new Range Rover Evoque has certainly contributed to the company fortunes. Those fortunes look set to continue in 2012 as the company plans to launch hybrid versions of its regular models, starting with the all-new Range Rover.
