The human hand is a sophisticated part of the anatomy. It comprises bone, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves, skin, and blood vessels.

Some of the most common problems affecting the human hand include peripheral nerve problems such as carpal tunnel and cubal tunnel syndromes.

In the former, a nerve is pinched at the wrist. In the latter, the nerve at the wrist as well as a nerve at the elbow are pinched. Both require Hand Surgery (Boston).

Other problems that require Hand Surgery (Boston) include wrist pain, tennis elbow, arthritis, limb differences, injuries, fractures, gangrene (diabetes patients especially may be highly vulnerable to this problem) and Stenosing Tenosynovitis (commonly called 'trigger finger' because the affected finger is crooked).

For hand surgery, the patient is referred to a hand surgeon either by a general physician or a neurologist. The hand surgeon can be an orthopedic surgeon, a plastic surgeon or a general surgeon. The general physician or neurologist may alternatively refer the patient to a neurosurgeon—a surgeon who specializes in surgical interventions concerning the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.

However, not all cases referred to surgeons result in surgeries. Hand surgeons may utilize their prerogative to instead recommend medication, therapy, splints, and the like to patients who have problems that are relatively less severe or those who may not experience much benefit from surgical interventions. A patient's medical history may also prompt the hand surgeon to disqualify him/her as a suitable candidate for hand surgery.

Among hand surgeons themselves, some hand surgeons may specialize in treating adults, while others may take on only pediatric cases. Still others may treat both adults as well as children, regardless of gender and age.

Hand surgeons, neurologists, and neuroscience and hand care professionals may be members of organizations such as the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Academy of Neurology.

Hand surgery may also mean microsurgery, which involves repair of nerves, blood vessels and other microscopic parts of the hand.

Following hand surgery, patients may be referred to a hand, physical or occupational therapist. Some health care facilities may also provide psychological counseling to patients suffering/recuperating from hand problems/surgeries.
