HTC Flyer HTC has launched a new Android tablet, HTC Flyer. HTC Flyer tablet runs on Android 2.4 OS.

Yet another tablet is here. This one is the much awaited HTC Flyer, the Android tablet from HTC’s stable. How well does it compare against the rivals? Let us find out.
Build & Ergonomics
The HTC Flyer carries forward the design elements from the Legend and Desire smartphones. The aluminum unibody build, as seen on the Legend, and the plastic elements on the Flyer’s rear panel look similar to the ones on the Desire. Quite slim, but the iPad 2 remains the king of slim tablets.
With the 7-inch screen are touch buttons- home, menu, return and stylus. The video call camera is placed above the screen, if you see it in landscape mode. The 5MP camera on the rear panel is towards the top left. The 3.5mm audio jack and the power button are on the top panel. The bottom panel has the proprietary USB port. Volume rocker is on the right side panel, while the left panel has been left completely clean.
The HTC Flyer has predefined ways of how you hold it, unlike the Apple iPad, which orients itself automatically, irrespective of how you may be holding it. The Flyer follows a “this side up” method.
Features
The 7-inch display is the LCD type has a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. The most unique feature on the HTC Flyer is the pen. The pen is also made from aluminum. Feels like a traditional pen, but relies on uniform pressure and precision to be able to work successfully. At the moment, there are very few apps that can utilize the pen’s capabilities. The Notes application is the one it is most compatible with. You can scribble, mark or highlight text in any document or note in the notes application. For anything else, you will need to take a screenshot of the screen before marking any changes. To take a screenshot, touch the display with the pen tip, and press the button on the pen. The image will be saved as a snapshot, and a prompt asking you to save or discard it will pop up.
Car Panel app looks like a full-fledged GPS navigator, and has a nice looking interface as well. Open the app and you will see the Destination menu, Footprints, Nearby, History, Settings and the Mark a location. This app is completely dependent on the availability of a GPS signal. Will not work indoors.
Performance
Surprisingly, the Flyer doesn’t have a dual core processor, but a 1.5GHz single core processor. This limits the Flyer’s capabilities- cannot play back 1080p HD videos. There is no HDMI port either, which we suspect is because of this only. While we will not say that the performance is slow by any standard, a dual core processor would have helped it a lot. HTC could have used the same dual core processor we saw on the Sensation smartphone.
The 7-inch display is very good. Vivid colours, and they do not pop out in an overtly vivid fashion, as we saw on the Samsung Galaxy S2. The black colour depth is much better than what we saw on the Sensation smartphone. While the crispness is quite good generally, it feels a little dull when watching videos.
The 5MP camera puts a lot of noise in every picture, and that kills the fun. This is true, irrespective of whether lighting is good or less. Videos have good colour depth, but are jerky and lack the fluidity.
HTC has rolled out the Flyer with Android 2.3, mostly because they did not want to sideline the Sense UI. Since Google doesn’t allow skin wrapping over the Android 3.0 OS, HTC stuck with the 2.3 OS version. This one is the HTC Sense for tablets 2.1 for tablets, and looks very similar to HTC Sense 3.0 that we saw on the HTC Sensation. Since this one isn’t 3.0, you wont get the tablet display optimized versions of many apps. For example, no tablet version of the Gmail app for you,
which offers a completely different and more workable interface thanks to the space available. Secondly, you will be stuck with apps essentially made for the smartphone display, on this big screen device. Some will not render properly, due to resolution compatibility issues.
Battery life on this device is quite good. This will last about a day and a half, from full charge to complete discharge. Usage consisted of continuous connectivity to the Wi-Fi networks, syncing mails and social networks, a bit of web browsing, watching videos and some music.
Verdict
Quite simply, the HTC Flyer has turned out to be a disappointment. Lack of a dual core processor, stuck on Android 2.3 instead of moving to Android 3.0, no HDMI out capability and cannot play back 1080p videos on the device either. Plus, at Rs 40k, this one is expensive. Why not wait for the Motorola Xoom or the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 before making the purchase decision?
