The Taiwanese phone manufacturer has just announced that it has released an unlock tool for the boot loader on its Android devices. This will allow users to customize the user interface on their devices. The tool can be downloaded on the HTCDev website. The tool supports devices such as the Flyer and the Sensation. The Explorer is not yet supported by the tool. However, the company did say that interested parties should check the HTCDev website from time to time since they are working on delivering the tool to more of their devices.
The Sense user interface is the most loved UI slapped on top of the Android operating system. However, there are some users who would want to get rid of it or customize the overall experience on their handset or tablet. To do this, you would have to unlock the boot loader on your device.
Unlocking boot loaders will allow users to make use of custom ROMs created by third-party developers or hackers. These ROMs include tools that you never would have been able to use. Another advantage is running Android in its vanilla form without the presence of UIs. Lastly, it will allow you to run the latest version of the Android operating system without having to wait for the official update.
True, these advantages sound good. However, there are also drawbacks to unlocking the boot loader of the HTC Explorer. The company says on the HTCDev website, "It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the boot loader may be covered under warranty." This means that doing so would void the phone's warranty.
The company also warns, "We strongly suggest that you do not unlock the boot loader unless you are confident that you understand the risks involved."
Why would they say this? Only unlock the HTC Explorer if you have experience using custom ROMs. If any case something goes wrong, you will not be able to reverse the action. Not even a full factory reset will work. This means that it is possible to brick the handset permanently. This would render the handset useless.
Since there are risks involved, unlocking the handset must only be done by technically experienced users. If you have no prior experience unlocking boot loaders, you should not go through the process. If you do have sufficient knowledge on custom ROMs, then do so at your own risk. This will allow you to make use of applications not ordinarily used on the HTC Explorer.
