With all the things that are happening in Australia, visa application has been severely greatly affected, indeed, in the last few months, while temporary visa numbers have stayed pretty much on the good side, permanent visas have experienced a significant drop. And this has a lot of groups very much worried.
One of the groups that has been severely affected by the changes made in the country's immigration program are those wishing to secure student visas. It is interesting to note that the student migration program is, in fact, one of the major areas that was given focus by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) in coming out with new regulations. The DIAC said that these new rules were essential in order to better select qualified foreign students.
Here, one of the biggest changes that the department has instituted was the reorganization of the courses that are suitable for application of a permanent visa. The reorganization is in accordance with similar changes that where made on the skilled migration program, which is closely connected to the former. Here, the department gave more focus on higher level courses and education. The DIAC also tightened the qualifications needed in order to get a student visa.
The department reiterated that these changes are necessary in order for Australia to better meet its worker needs. Indeed, according to the latest data, the country is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled workers in key industries. The department hopes that, through the changes, it will be able to fill in the needs of these vital industries.
However, there are groups that are not welcoming of the idea. Not surprisingly, the foreign student community is one of the biggest groups who are concerned about the changes in the student migration program. They argue that these changes have greatly affected their chances of getting a visa and studying in the country. They have also said that the new rules have also started to scare off potential students from applying for a visa. Indeed, the number of student visa applications have dropped of significantly since the new rules were implemented.
And it is not only the students themselves who are complaining about the ill effects of the changes. State officials themselves are now concerned about how these would affect their area's viability for student travel. According to Victoria Premiere John Brumby, they are now experiencing a decrease in the number of foreign students enrolling in their schools. Victoria has the largest foreign student population among the states of Australia.
Many schools are also worried that if the trend continues, their income will also likely suffer. As it is, a lot of the tertiary education institutes in Australia actually relies on foreign students for a large part of their incomes, hence the apprehension.
These groups have started to clamor for the government to reconsider these new rules. However, the DIAC is adamant that these are necessary for the benefit of the country. How this one would turn out is something a lot of people are eagerly awaiting.
