There have been countless great TV shows about lawyers since the dawn of television technology, and it will undoubtedly continue to be so as long as there are TVs and attorneys. The following are perhaps the most memorable and influential of all these great TV shows, many of which have stood the test of time through re-runs and spin-offs:
Ally McBeal
This was one of the most popular television series between 1997 and 2002, as Calista Flockhart’s kooky character took the nation by storm. Ally McBeal was a comedic drama created by David E. Kelly that dealt with the bizarre personal issues of the eccentric cast of characters in a fictional law firm.
L.A. Law
This series was the premiere legal drama of the 1980s and 1990s, with a long run from 1986 to 1994. The plotline revolved around the exciting, multifaceted and imperfect lives of a sexy, smart and dangerous team of lawyers at the fictional McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney & Kuzak law firm. With soap opera like twists and characters that had very human flaws, the series attracted a loyal following until its end.
Law & Order
With 20 seasons under its belt and numerous spin-off series, Law & Order is definitely the longest running legal television series. In fact, it is more of an empire. The talented ensemble casts, well-known guest appearances and intense plots that take real-life legal issues and spin them with a twist are what make this series so popular.
Perry Mason
From 1957 to 1966, Perry Mason ruled the airwaves. Raymond Burr’s legendary character provided a peek into the life of an American lawyer that many people in TV land had never seen before. Plots typically involved Mason upsetting the prosecutor, freeing his client and finding the real culprit of the crime. Starting as a radio series, the show already had an audience when it moved to television.
The Practice
The same year that Ally McBeal hit the airwaves, David E. Kelley created another legal series for a different network. As a lawyer himself, Kelley had plenty of expertise in this field. The Practice told the story of Bobby Donnell, played by Dylan McDermott, an attractive, young defense attorney driven to succeed. He was surrounded by other attorneys at the law firm of Robert Donnell & Associates that lacked the pedigree of typical lawyers at a big firm, but all had plenty of persistence and spunk.
