Ever since Google displayed an array of links called sitelinks that appear below on some website’s search engine results page (SERP) listings, this latest SERPs’ algorithmic change has generated more interest in the world of professional search engine optimization.
As this sitelink results in the increase of a site’s prominence in Google SERPs, potentially delivering more visitors to a site, more and more website owners and SEO services providers alike are becoming more interested in these array of links --- specifically how can their websites get sitelinks.
What is Google SiteLinks?
Google Sitelinks are those extra arrays of links that are sometimes displayed below on some websites first search result in Google SERPs listings. These are pertinent internal links --- so they link to specific section (page) of the same website --- that points to specific relevant internal pages deeper within the first result of a website that may be useful to the user.
Moreover, these sub-listings of internal links are randomly and automatically chosen by Google's algorithm and Google only displays these links when they think they’ll be most useful to searchers; thus, saving them time from hunting through web pages to find the information they are looking for.
How to Get SiteLinks?
As SiteLinks increase a site’s prominence in Google search results and as such, when a site occupies more SERP real estate, traffic is increased. Google only displays sitelinks when a site ranks very highly for a particular search term in their SERPs --- according to a search engine optimization expert --- it has become more important and of great interest to website owners and Search Engine Optimization Firms to get sitelinks for their site.
So How Do You Get Sitelinks?
The process of choosing which sites get sitelinks and which sitelinks are included is purely automated and randomly chosen by Google’s search engine algorithm. Though generally, Google displays sitelinks if it is certain that a website is the exact match for a search query and they think they'll be useful to the user.
Google is said to generate sitelinks for a site on the basis of a website’s navigation and on the links that point to their website.
However, if Google does not display sitelinks for your website then it is recommended that you should work on your website navigation by:
- try to use regular (a href) links as often as possible instead of using JavaScript and Flash navigation
- if you use images for your website navigation, make sure that these images include alternative texts that will allow Google to categorize your links
- structure your site so it would be easy for Google’s algorithms to find good sitelinks for Google’s systems analyze the link
- structure of your site to find shortcuts that will save users time and allow them to quickly find the information they're looking for
- avoid using too much navigation links for the better a web page is linked, the more it will increase your chance that Google will display sitelinks for your site
How to Make your SiteLinks More Attractive?
As Google uses only the first 30-35 characters of the meta description tag of a web page for the snippets, it is recommended that your meta description tags should be optimized by:
- make sure that each of your site’s pages first 35 characters in the meta description tag should contain a clear description of the page and/or a call-to-action
- ensure that each page of your website should have its own meta description
Remember that sitelinks of a website are updated by Google periodically so it may take some time before the new descriptions of your web pages are displayed in the sitelinks.
