The cell phones have become a part and parcel of human life. Their technologies change at a rapid speed and as a result a model can become outdated within a few months of its launch. As a matter of fact, people dump their old phone when they buy a new handset.

It has been found from the surveys carried out on the cell phone users that a whopping 97 percent do not think about recycling. This was found out post a survey that was carried out by Cell phone giant Nokia across 13 nations. Strange as it many sound, a lot of cell phone users do not even know that it is possible to recycle their phones. More than 70 percent of the surveyed people said that they did know where the process is done.

The survey also highlighted that a majority of the people use more than one cellphone nowadays. In fact some people use as many as five cell phones. More than 40 percent of these phones are not used as they are kept at home. Around 4 percent of these phones are discarded when they become unusable. These phones are used in landfill. Several toxic and harmful metals are used to make cell phones and some of them are zinc, cadmium, arsenic, copper and lithium. Hence, it can damage the environment seriously. If people dump them rampantly the danger of severe land and water pollution will increase which in turn can give birth to widespread diseases among the residents.

Therefore, the Cellphone users need to increase their knowledge about phone recycling. A lot of people use the Nokia cell phones. Almost 80 percent of the Nokia Cellphones can be recycled. The environmental affairs director at Nokia is of the opinion that the latest recycling technology does not exclude any material in the cell phones. The metals used to make the phones can be used for other purposes.

What many people do not know is the fact that Nokia already has collection points for unused and unwanted handsets in more than 80 nations across the world. The Nokia mobile set users can also drop their unwanted handsets at 5,000 Nokia Care Centers and Nokia stores. The Nokia website can be used to locate a nearest collection point by the users.

There are a number of groups and non profit organizations that collect unwanted cell phone for people and send them for recycling. The cell phone users who have a number of unused handsets at home can contact these organizations. If a person is not aware about them he can search the web to find their locations. Phone recycling will also enable the companies to save a lot of money that is spent in acquiring the raw material. The cases and chips of the old phones can be used to make other hardware components.
