The Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) is the latest iteration of the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). Unlike the ATV which is straddled like a motorcycle, a UTV is ridden like a golf car and has provisions for a passenger sitting beside the driver. In fact some UTV’s can accommodate 3 passengers. There are 4x2 and 4x4 variants making them practical go-anywhere vehicles.
Most UTV’s come with a roll over protection system (ROPS). Some even have windshields and cabin enclosures for additional safety. However, bear in mind that the safety features of these vehicles are far from those available in your common automobile.
A typical UTV will have a 300cc single cylinder gasoline engine. The more efficient ones are 4-stroke and water-cooled. And just like in a motorcycle, the UTV battery plays an important role in starting the engine. In fact, the battery is more critical for a UTV considering that it does not have a kick-start facility unlike motorcycles.
AGM Batteries are Recommended
Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries have been used in automobiles for years. They are commonly known as maintenance-free, gel cell, or sealed type. They do not need regular topping with distilled water.
This battery type is now available for motorcycles, scooters, ATV’s and UTV’s. Its higher cranking capacity makes it highly recommended for faster starts and in powering the electrical accessories that go with ATV’s and UTV’s.
But note that these so-called maintenance-free batteries also need proper care. Especially when not used for extended periods (more than one month), the battery should be removed from the vehicle and trickle charged. These will ensure top performance and maximum service life.
Things to Consider When Buying UTV Batteries
Note that the batteries available in the market are not equal in terms of quality. For this reason, consider the following when purchasing UTV batteries:
* Make sure that the case is tough enough to withstand the rigors of your intended use. Off-road use will necessitate a more robust design. Also, it should be properly sealed to lock in the electrolyte.
* Some batteries have a special design that increases the plate surface area. This increases cranking power and allows faster charging.
* There are some batteries, which make use of special gel electrolyte. These are said to perform well even in extreme temperatures. Some are marketing hype, but some do work. Check the reviews.
* Make sure that the terminals are well sealed in order to prevent acid seepage. This will prevent corrosion and improve conduction.
* Check the warranty. Although you are better off not experiencing battery failure due to manufacturing defects, at least you have protection in case you end up with a lemon.
Where to Buy Batteries
If there is a battery shop conveniently located, visit the store. Make sure that you know the actual specifications of the battery you intend to purchase. Check the owner’s manual if necessary, or bring along your old battery. Most of these stores carry original and replacement brands. And usually they have motorcycle and scooter batteries as well.
For utmost convenience, you can purchase the battery online. There are websites with a battery selector facility. This makes it easy for you to choose between several available brands. For optimum UTV performance, a reliable battery is required. Choosing the right one is important, but so is properly maintaining it.
