A lot of ways can be done for the algae in your garden pond not to be totally eliminated but to be controlled. Nevertheless, some people are not that knowledgeable of these ways and instead of getting some alternatives on how to control algae from conquering the whole pond, they go directly to using algaecides.
A much as they are important to water systems like ponds, algae can be a source of headache especially for ponds owners. These plant-like organisms flourish the most in water systems that get much of the sunlight. They also get the energy to exist and multiply from the fish wastes which release nutrients for algae to survive.
Some ways to prevent algae from overtaking your garden pond is to avoid over feeding the fish in the pond. As mentioned earlier, the algae get most of the nutrients they need from the waste produced by your fish. So the more they eat, the more nutrients the algae will get. And if you give too much food to your pond fish, there will be enough leftover food for the algae to consume hence they will thrive in your pond even more.
Another way to control the growth of algae in the pond is to do a regular water change. This can be done at least once a year. The best time would be in the spring since the weather condition in this season is quite stable. Having a pond filter can also considerably delay the buildup of nutrients for the algae although not all of it can be taken care of. If not cleaned, the pond will have an excessive amount of wastes and nutrients for the algae to prosper.
Algae depend most of their life on the sunlight they get. So, one way of stopping them from growing in large blooms is to control the light exposure of your pond. If you are still planning to put up a garden pond, be sure to install it under a tall tree in your garden. This way, the pond will not be exposed too much to the sun.
Doing the annual water change of your garden pond is accompanied by another task. You also need to remove all the plants and other ornaments in the pond. Once removed, you may start cleaning each by gently scrubbing all the algae formed on them using hot to warm water. This is also a good way to prevent the flourishing of algae. Aside from the plants, you can also try scrubbing ornamental rocks in the pond. That way, the algae on them will no longer be in existence.
If you think that you have done all of these things and still you have the algae quandary, then you can try using algaecides. But of course, this should always be your last resort since algaecides are chemical based and are harmful if used wrongly. Be sure to use enough algaecides to kill some algae in the pond. Algaecides give a massive result so do not attempt to use them on a regular basis. It is good to know that algae are not always bad for your pond so do not try to kill them all.
