Quite simply, a domestic robot is either a simple or complex machine used for household chores. There are only a few limited models thus far, but scientists all over the country are anticipating a robot revolution within the next couple of decades. In fact in 2006, America’s richest man Bill Gates wrote an article entitled “A Robot in Every Home”, which discusses the great potential for robots in a typical American household.
There are three classes of domestic robots: low level, care and chore, and the highest level robot, the domobot. Low level robots are basic machines usually for entertainment purposes. One example of this would be the Aibo, a robotic pet. Both care and chore robots, and domobots are used for household chores, but domobots are far more sophisticated as they are autonomous and high-powered units. There are several domestic robots in the market today, but most of them still lack in function and technology. However, there are three domestic robots that remain to be useful when it comes to assisting in household chores. If I were you, I would get a hold of one of these immediately.
PatrolBot
Built by MobileRobots Inc., the PatrolBot is a programmable, self-sufficient and general-purpose service robot. What it does is it roams around like a security guard, or goes to pre-programmed places using a map, which you can create and edit manually using its computer system. What began as a mere security robot that roams around a certain place, the PatrolBot is now used for a broad range of applications. It can take care of security with its multiple cameras and detection abilities. It can carry up to 15 lbs of weight, which means you can have it carry and deliver objects from point A to point B. As a Wi-Fi device, PatrolBot can operate autonomously or be controlled using a remote control unit and other indoor services such as deliveries and memory scanning.
Roomba
As a very intelligent robotic vacuum cleaner, the Roomba is gaining mainstream popularity in the US. More than 3 million units have been sold since it was introduced in 2002. Each unit is a disc measuring 13 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches high, with an infrared sensor at the top front center for both remote control use and floor detection. Its vacuuming service is far better than a typical vacuum cleaner and it provides more convenience to the user as well. You can program your Romba to clean at a certain schedule even when you’re out. There’s also a “Virtual Wall” feature that enables the robot to move from room to another after the floor of the former is completely vacuumed. Last but certainly not the least, the “homebase” feature allows you to program the Roomba to return to its charger, and automatically recharge its batteries after a long day of work.
Scooba
While the Roomba vacuums your floor, the Scooba washes it. Produced by iRobot, the Scooba is another automated robotic floor washer that uses a special non-bleach cleaning solution that effectively cleans the floors and prevents skidding or rust. Unlike some automatic cleaning machines, the Scooba starts its routine by vacuuming solid debris to eliminate loose material, then squirts the cleaning solution and scrubs the floor. It finishes off by sucking up the mixture of solution and dirt, leaving a totally clean and dry floor. On a single tank-load of solution, this useful little robot can clean about 850 square feet of flooring. GP
