General approach for solving critical reasoning questions

Read the question stem first. This will help you to decide what you are going to be looking for in the paragraph when you read it for the first stem. Next read the passage, identifying the claim, the supporting reason/evidence, the assumption inherent in the argument and the inference that can be made from the argument.

3) Pre phase your answer, knowing what you are going to be looking for while reading the options I helpful in order to get the correct answer. Then, check the options to see which on e best fits your opinion.
Questions types in critical reasoning-
Question type 1 – the strengthen of an argument- the claim of an argument by reason is supported by reason or evidence. In question will ask you to select from amongst the four/five options. The one that strengthens the argument. Arguments can be strengthening in two ways- either through the introduction of some supporting evidence or the introduction of some supporting reasons. Hence these questions might ask you to select an option that provides either supporting evidence or supporting reasons.
Question type 2 the weakening of an argument – these questions are very similar to strengthening arguments questions- the only difference being tat they are on the other side of the fence. Similar to the strengthening of argument, weakening of arguments ca also b done by the introduction of additional evidence and reasons that attacks the basis of the claim of the argument.
Question type 3 – this question type ask you to identify the assumption in the paragraph.
Question type 4 – identify an inference/conclusion- question related to these will ask you to spot the option that is/is not an inference or a conclusion that can be draw from the detail mentioned in the paragraph.
Question type 5 – select the best concluding statement of a paragraph- in these types of question, a paragraph is given and four alternative concluding statements are given for the same. You are required to choose the option that best concludes the paragraph.
Question type 6 – question that ask you to summaries an argument . This is another important question type that has been regularly asked in various competitive exams.
Question type 7 question that ask you to identify the relevancy of the argument – relevant information are framed with the objective of testing the students abilities to understand the main idea of the passage. The student Is expected to test various options for their relevance to the arguments presented.
Question type 8 – question tat ask you to evaluate the method of the argument. This type of question asks students to identify the technique applied by the author of the argument in order to make hi argument.
Question type 9 question that ask you to identify the flaws/facilities in an argument. Flaws based questions are similar to method based questions. The only difference is that unlike in the case of method questions where the validity of the argument matters.
