In order to be successful in mixed martial arts, you need to have all of the proper MMA gear at your disposal. More than a recreational hobby, MMA is a serious pursuit that requires passion, dedication, athleticism and all of the equipment that will keep you protected and successful. Before you begin training, make sure you have everything that you need. If you are practicing with a class, talk to your instructor about where to find the best gear. If you are taking a more solitary approach, make sure you have all of the gear listed below.
Start out with the basics: gloves. Your MMA training begins with a sturdy, durable and reliable pair of gloves. These might take some getting used to, so invest in a high end pair of closed gloves that will be with you for awhile. In addition to gloves, you will need handwraps and other padding that will protect your knees and elbows. Headgear is also essential. As you develop your MMA expertise, you will be exposed to sharp kicks, jabs, punches and other physical altercations. Having good head protection will make a big difference.
Buy several mouth guards. Your teeth will be in great danger when you engage in MMA fights and matches. Protecting your mouth and your teeth is important, unless you are willing to pay for expensive and extensive dental work. Think about other parts of your body that need protection. Shin guards are also a great asset to fighters who do not want to end up with scratched, bruised and even broken legs. Groin protection is also important. All of your sensitive spots should be covered, cushioned and secure against any sharp kicks or jabs.
Your gear should also include the right shorts. Most MMA fighters wear Fairtex shorts that are loose in the legs, made of breathable, comfortable satin and fit snuggly and easily around the waist. Look for shorts with a draw string so you can adjust how tightly they are worn. Other gear that is not essential but might help you out a lot include gym bags, training pads, belts and a few first aid items that you can keep with you at all times. Make sure you have water, towels and anything else that will help you perform at your best during MMA competitions and training sessions.
Whether you are new to the sport or an old pro, having the right MMA gear is essential to your success. You can be a great fighter, but that won't matter if you don't have the right gloves, mouth guard and protection for your head, hands, shins and groin. Take inventory of what you have and what you need before you begin.
