Do you have a problem with your garage door? Is it sticking, juddering, making an unexpected noise, or has it stopped working altogether?
Before you start looking at new garage door prices, consider whether you can get your existing one repaired. Most garage door repairs will be cheaper than a brand new door.
Here's a quick checklist of common problems - often you can repair garage doors quickly and cost-effectively:
Fittings
Over time, fittings can become loose, causing your garage door to judder and increasing the risk of wear and tear. Examine all of the hardware, including the brackets that hold the tracks, the plates where the spring is mounted, and the door hinges. Make sure all of the screws or bolts are tightened.
Hinges
Check the garage door hinges for wear and tear. Hinges tend to be weak spots in garage doors, because the rain can get in and rust the screws or the hinges themselves. If you spot rust, the best solution is to replace the hinges.
Springs
If garage door springs have worn out or lost their tension, they can cause the garage door to become too heavy, and can eventually snap. If you need to replace your springs, take great care, as the tension is so great that you could be injured. It may be best to get it professionally replaced.
Tracks
If you have an up and over garage door, check the metal tracks on your garage walls. Make sure they're clean, and then have a look for any dents, damage or rust. Any noticeable problems should be repaired as soon as possible, and if the tracks are badly damaged they will need to be replaced.
Door opener
One of the commonest causes of garage door problems is a faulty electric door opener. If you think your door opener is faulty and you may need a new one, check the power supply first as it may have been disrupted. Make sure the unit is plugged in, and then check the fuse and circuit breaker.
Safety protection system
If you can open your garage door without a problem, but it sticks when you are trying to close it, there may be a problem with your safety protection system, which is a requirement for all modern garage doors. Usually this is a safety beam that recognises when something is in the way of the door. If you think there may be a problem, check first whether the beam is dirty or obstructed before you contact a professional.
Wooden doors
If you notice rot in your wooden garage door, especially around the hinges or the bottom of the door, don't despair - it can be repaired. Minor areas of damage can be fixed with a wooden repair system, where the rot is dried out and filled. Major areas of rot can often be fixed by replacing sections of the door. Carrying out repairs to wooden garage doors can be difficult however, because usually the door will need to be taken off its hinges.
