Understanding acid reflux symptoms begins with understanding what it is. Acid reflux is when gastric juices from the stomach are pushed up into the esophagus. This can be caused by eating too fast or too much at one time. Excessive acid production in the stomach can also be one of acid reflux symptoms.
Understanding acid reflux symptoms begins with understanding what it is. Acid reflux is when gastric juices from the stomach are pushed up into the esophagus. This can be caused by eating too fast or too much at one time. Excessive acid production in the stomach can also be one of acid reflux symptoms. If there are problems with the esophageal valve at the top of the stomach, problems can also occur. Over time, these acid reflux symptoms can lead to scarring since the acid eats away at the esophagus.

The most common symptoms of acid reflux is what most people refer to as heartburn. That is the burning feeling that goes from the stomach up into the throat. It often has an aftertaste and creates a great deal of pain. It most often occurs after a large meal, when bending over, or lying down. Many people have the worst acid reflux symptoms when they lay down to go to sleep at night. The easiest way to prevent these acid reflux symptoms is to eat smaller meals at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. This helps prevent an overfull stomach from expelling acid when you lay down.

Dyspepsia is another one of the most commonly occurring acid reflux symptoms. Dyspepsia is often referred to as indigestion. This differs from heartburn in that there is fullness in the stomach. This can cause pain and discomfort in the region. Nausea and an upset stomach are also reflux symptoms. Regurgitation can also occur. This is the feeling of acid or other fluids backing up in the throat. It can make it as far as the mouth in a burp or even come out as vomit.

Other less commonly occurring acid reflux symptoms can be seen away from the stomach area.

- Chest pains can be related to this disorder. It can feel like food is lodged in the area of the back side the breastbone. This is a time where caution must be taken. Chest pains can also be symptoms of heart attack and angina. If you have any doubts, call a doctor or ER immediately.

- Acid reflux symptoms can also lead to acid laryngitis and trouble swallowing.

- Asthmatic symptoms can occur in some people.

- Chronic nausea and vomiting may be a sign as well.

But if any of the acid reflux symptoms persist for any length of time, consult a doctor. All of these symptoms of acid reflux can be signs of underlying issues other than acid reflux. It is important to know what is going on so that proper treatment can be undertaken.
