Houses have gotten a lot larger over the last few decades and if you choose to move you may find yourself in a much bigger space than you're used to. All of a sudden you're short on furniture and your large new home doesn't feel as welcoming and cozy as your smaller apartment did. You're not alone in feeling a little spatially overwhelmed.

Luckily there are a handful of tricks you can use to make even the hugest room seem comfortable and homey. And most of the following suggestions are easy enough to do-it-yourself!

Color - To make a small room larger everyone will tell you that the key is lighter colored paint. As such, the best way to make an overwhelmingly large room seem less so would be to use darker colors. Think warm deep colors, chocolate browns, deep forest greens or perhaps a dark plum color. These dark tones will absorb rather than reflect light and this will make the room feel smaller. High ceilings? Don't forget that a darker shade there will also make them feel less out of reach and bring the room together. The obvious thing is to think of pain colors, but don’t forget this as you choose fabric colors. A couch with a darker Robert Allen fabric or drapery with rich Duralee fabrics will help as well.

Furniture - You'll want to have furniture proportioned to your room sizes. The smaller loveseat that fit just fine in that one bedroom apartment will look lost in an oversized living room, save it to tuck away in a guest room or an office. Pick oversized, overstuffed furniture to go in a large room. Use furniture and rugs to break an area up. Surround a smaller coffee table with a few chairs to create a 'separate' sitting area within your room – place this in a part of your room away from your main seating area, giving an illusion of two different areas.

Accents – Again we're looking for darker, warmer colors in our accents. Pick heavy fabrics such as faux fur and velvet. These will add texture and drama to the area. In a large space let your dramatic flair go wild! Choose dramatic curtains in layers – they'll absorb light and take up a chunk of wall space. Greenhouse Fabrics has some great choices for this. Avoid placing mirrors in the room, if possible. Reflecting light will only make the room feel larger. Go for huge art pieces to place on the walls instead – metal sculptures or oil paintings. Oversized prints and photographs work great too! Hanging fabric or tapestries on the wall are another great way to give a larger room a more closed in feel.

Foliage - Have fun choosing some oversized plants to place in your room. Smaller plants that you'd normally see in a smaller apartment would get lost in an oversized room, but having a large room leaves you open to some really fun options. Give a potted citrus tree a go in the form of a smaller orange or lemon tree.

Even the largest living area, once well thought out and balanced, can feel as comfortable and as cozy as a beach side cottage, and with the employment of some of the suggestions above can quickly become one of your favorite rooms in your new house.
