Frequent anger, defiance and hostile attitudes towards parents and others are common attributes of a growing child or an adolescent. They are rude, arrogant and disrespectful to their elders. However, if this behavior persists beyond a particular age and affects the social behavior of a child, then it becomes a disorder. A child with such oppositional defiance tends to be detached from his/her family, is not flexible listening to advices and has aggressive behavior.
Though, in most cases these attitudinal problems get resolved after the development stage, but for some it may turn out to be a disorder that affects the overall personality and well-being of a child. Children who are lonesome, ignored and suffer from constant depression and bereavement are mostly subject to Oppositional defiant disorder and Reactive attachment disorder. Both these disorders are actually psychological problems that result from severe hindrance in forming parental and social attachments during the development stage.
Unlike other children of the same age, a kid with such attachment disorders has anger related problems, blames others for his/her own mistakes and has revengeful attitude. Typically, such kids are difficult to handle because of their lack of empathy for others and their constant resentment for everything. Children with Oppositional defiant disorder and Reactive attachment disorder prefer to stay alone and avoid their caregivers or parents.
The most unfortunate fact is that these behavior disorders may also result in Conduct disorders. A kid with this problem often resorts to unlawful activities and are very impulsive. This may finally take the form of psychopath, which is a severe psychological problem and requires immediate hospitalization. To treat a defiant child with these disorders, it also becomes necessary to diagnose whether the kid has other co-existing disorders like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood disorders or bipolar disorders, and anxiety disorders.
Other than detailed medical diagnosis, it is also necessary to provide proper parental care to such disturbed child. The various ways through which parents or caregivers can help children are as follows:
1. Parents should understand the mood of their child and should show them positive attitude when their child shows respect and co-operation.
2. Whenever there is a chance for argument, take a time-out to prevent quarrelling with your child. Also allow your child to take a time-out when he/she wants to.
3. Consult with other parents and caregivers to tackle the behavior issues of your child.
4. Don’t give in to all the demands of your kid. Prioritize the things you want your child to do. Be firm, yet polite.
5. Set out age appropriate limits for your child. Also specify the consequences of breaking rules.
6. Maintain a proper mental health to avoid stress. Your stress may create further chaos and will adversely affect the child. Take up stress relieving activities like Reiki, exercise, meditation etc.
However, when parents get helpless and the problem becomes further complex, it becomes mandatory to visit professional psychologists and psychiatrists. A number of therapeutic treatments are available to treat Oppositional defiant disorders among children. For instance, open counselling treatments like Psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behavioural therapy and Social Skill therapy are some of the common treatments that aim to make the child conscious about his/her well being.
