Accident investigations officials are enquiring about any possibility of a link between the seeds which are sold by a particular British firm and the E coli break out in France. France government banned the selling of three types of seeds in particular which are linked to Thompson & Morgan, which is based in cIpswich, Suffolk. This banned directly relates to the action taken by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
According to the accident investigations department there were eight people who were affected by E coli and have been admitted to a hospital in Bordeaux. The result of the tests done by the health and safety training officials’ shows an infection of E coli which had killed earlier 44 people along with affecting 3700 others. This outbreak took place in the central Germany including Britons as well.
Further an investigation done by the health and safety training program found that the people who were hospitalised had consumed the mustard and rocket vegetable sprouts. These sprouts are believed to be grown from the seeds which are sold by Thompson & Morgan at a school located in the town of Begels in south west.
Later Frederic Lefebvre, the commerce minister also stated that the ban involved rocket, mustard and fenugreek seeds. However, he further added that the link between the consumption of sprouts and symptoms were not definitely established.
The Food Hygiene Training department and the FSA asked Thompson Morgan for further information about the seeds along with adding that there was no report of the E coli cases in the UK. The Food Hygiene Training department stated that they have been in continuous contact with the French authorities regarding this outbreak and are well aware of its connection being related to a UK business. This department has even asked the French government for more information in respect to these three seeds to help in the investigation.
According to the health and safety policy the possibility of the seeds to carry the E coli was very high. However it is important to investigate the process of the cultivation of the seeds, by whom were they planted and lastly how was the food prepared. Health and safety policy also said it was in the process of revising the guidance for the consumption of sprouted seeds like beensprouts, alfalfa and fenugreek.
Risk Assessments Nottingham advise to consume the seeds only when cooked thoroughly until steaming hot and not at all in the raw form. Risk assessment Nottingham also says that the equipment or utensil used for cooking the sprouting seeds must be cleaned thoroughly once used. Also, one must wash their hands properly both after planting and sprouting the sprouting seeds.
Although the website of Thompson & Morgan describes having the expertise in the garden since long but there is no description of the link of German E coli break out. Thompson & Morgan also said that they have been selling thousands of packets but have not got any such issue so far.
