Franz Kafka was a German novelist with a Czech origin who wrote about the experiences of troubled individuals living in utter isolation and turmoil. He also wrote short stories. In his works the protagonists are depicted as fighting against elements beyond their control and understanding. His works are very much different from other writers of his time and that is why his writings have to be read with more concentration and attention in order to understand the actual meaning behind every sentence.

This prolific writer was born in 1883 in a middle class household in Prague. His upbringing in a Jewish minority and isolation from the Czech-speaking community of Prague affected his mindset from an early age. The feelings of distrust, bitterness and insecurity in his family that haunted his own childhood are often reflected in the protagonists of his novels. Most of his protagonists are shown searching for their roots in an alien surrounding. Another source of discomfort for Franz Kafka was his despotic father who always underestimated his son. Therefore, his young years were filled with conflicts with the domineering father. It was this conflict and the need to search his own roots that led Kafka to write novels of this kind.

Right from his childhood, Franz Kafka had a flair for writing. He was an avid reader of literature and the legendary works of stalwarts like Flaubert, Goethe, and Pascal affected him deeply. His first group of stories was published before the First World War with the title ‘Betrachtung’ meaning contemplation. He dedicated this book to his closest friend Max Brod. Kafka fell in love with Felice Bauer, a Jewish girl in 1912. This had far reaching consequences on his life as well as works. However, this relation did not translate in to a marriage and Kafka severed his ties with his lover for the thought that his obsession with literature will not give him the chance to be a good husband.

In 1913, the reputed work of Franz Kafka named ‘Die Verwandlung’ was published. This spine chilling story of a human degrading in to an animal takes the readers to a state of Psychotic delusion. However, it was his three outstanding novel fragments named Der Prozes, Amerika, and Das Schloss that made his fame cross continental boundaries. His close buddy, Max Brod played a vital role in publishing them.

The first of these novels was started in 1912 and was published with the title Amerika after 15 years. Another novel, The Trial is conceived as a tale of a man helpless in the hands of fate and suffering from a sense of guilt. While working on ‘The Castle’ his health suffered badly and he was compelled to take rest and opt for vacations. He passed away in 1924, leaving a storehouse of literary treasure behind.

His works are still followed by many contemporary authors as a source of inspiration.
