Redactions are a dreaded task. For those of you who deal with confidential and secure information, leaving an uncontrolled paper trail is nothing less than a surefire way to ensure that you'll have a substantial mess to clean up later. Removing information from your documents before final publication can be difficult when most common digital redaction approaches use incorrect methods like simply covering up data using PDF annotations instead of actually deleting it. In many such cases, the information can be extracted from the document's metadata later on, and even the best editors might miss this important factor.
Metadata is special hidden information that describes the contents of an object in detail, so it must be removed carefully. Typical digital methods to deal with metadata and text content in a PDF involve covering confidential items with black rectangular highlighting, converting the PDF to multiple image files and then reassembling those files into one PDF document. While this strategy is effective in the long run, it is very inefficient, requiring time and attention to detail. Additionally, the loss of document text structure means that your image-based PDF will no longer be searchable, a major advantage of the format. Adobe, the proprietor of the original PDF, recommends using regular authoring tools equipped with redaction plug ins to remove private data, but this requires you to have multiple copies of the PDF authoring tool.
Classified reports contain large volumes of information that may be unclassified and need to be distributed within your organization or to other agencies, as such, redactions are essential to the regular operation of many government agencies. The NSA has undergone a recent bout of widely-publicized redaction failures since the early 2000's, with pertinent data being easily extracted from underneath black "marked-out" areas using regular copy and paste commands that any computer user is familiar with. Oversights happen when large volumes of information are in play and there's no better way to avoid such mistakes than by removing the potential for human error if at all possible.
The best way to redact PDFs is to let your software handle it for you, and with Code Origami InfoRazor Server, that's as simple as sending an email from within your existing client to the single computer needed to run the application. When Info Razor Server finds a message in its queue that contains a file ready to be changed, it makes the redactions and sends the modified file back with an email report of its actions. Since there are no other steps than this, there shouldn't be any reason for your redactions to not essentially take care of themselves. Info Razor Server is a standalone application that works with a single install and a minimal amount of overhead to deliver the redactions solutions your digital library needs to become truly accessible.
