You might find it quite interesting to know that there are many hazardous materials that we deal with in our daily lives. They are all mixed up with many other materials and thus not many of us notice them. But if noticed individually, you would see that many products are termed as the hazardous materials.
The main problem arises when these hazardous materials are transported from one place to another. There are always high risks when it comes to the transportation of these materials since they might start reacting with other elements of nature and wreak havoc to the mankind and the nature.
These days, the dangerous goods are usually transported via the water, road or air ways. All these routes are now guided by some international organizations like the DOT (Department of Transportation) and the IATA (International Air Transport Association). These organizations have already laid out some strict rules regarding the transportation of the dangerous goods by water, roads or air ways. In case of the roadways, the rules are laid by DOT and in case of the airways, it is the IATA. There is also the IMO (International Maritime Organization) for the water ways.
Since it is of high risk to transport the dangerous goods via the air ways and the air ways, the IATA and the DOT have imposed some tough guidelines for the transportation. There are numerous processes that are followed while transportation of these goods. At the very beginning, all the dangerous goods are thoroughly checked numerous times and then surveyed by the field security officers so that all the goods are free of damage.
Next these goods are packed in some special containers as per the instructions implemented by the IATA and the DOT. All the processes are supervised by the field security officers as well as the hazardous materials consultants. These special containers are the special precautionary measures that are taken by the DOT and the IATA so that even if there is some reaction taking place between the dangerous elements, the effect is not coming out of the containers easily and thus the mankind and the environment is safe.
As per the rules and regulations put forward by the IATA and the DOT, some specialists who are well trained HAZMAT professionals are always sent along during the transportation. This is mainly done so as to take care of any disaster that might happen on the way of transit.
