Stripping your floors means removing the old finish or wax in order to make your floors look shiny and new. Keep in mind that as time passes by, the finishing on your floor may fade or turn to yellow – making it an eye sore. There are times that even burnishing them or polishing them regularly will not correct the situation. This is when you need to do floor stripping. This procedure is quite easy to perform if you have the correct skills and equipment with you.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) suggests the following instructions when you strip your floors:

• As much as possible, avoid stripping your floors constantly. Once or twice a year is recommended, depending on the condition of your floors.

• Trained personnel or individuals should do the stripping to ensure that the procedure is done properly and safely.

• Proper work practice should be followed.

• Never carry out dry stripping. Floors should be adequately wet when the procedure is being done.

• Equip your floor stripper with the least abrasive pad.

How to Properly Strip Your Floor

It is recommended that you avail of a commercial floor care services to ensure that your floors are properly maintained. These establishments have trained and highly-skilled technicians that will carry out the whole procedure; therefore, your floor gets the best possible care. If you choose to do things yourself, remember that skill is very important when it comes to stripping floors. The more practice you have, the better you will get.

To do it properly, you need the following materials and equipment:

• Dust mop and brush
• Dust pan
• Putty knife
• Dry/wet vacuum
• 2 buckets
• 2 buckets with wringers
• Stripping solution
• Cool fresh water
• Commercial neutralizer (or use a vinegar solution: ½ pt vinegar + 2 gal water)
• Wet mop
• Floor machine
• Stripping pads

Here are the steps for proper floor stripping:

1. Get hold of a floor stripper that is suitable for your floor finish. If possible, use one with the same trade name as your wax.

2. Place a hazard sign near your work area.

3. Move the furniture away from the area where you are going to start working.

4. Dust mop the area to remove loose dirt that could potentially scratch the floor during the procedure. Get rid of as much dirt and dust as you can.

5. Remove any tar, gum or any material stuck on the floor using a putty knife.

6. Test the stripping solution on one part of the floor before you start the whole procedure. Take into consideration that some old linoleum may not bear up with the stripping process and their colors might bleed.

7. Follow the instructions for the proper use of the stripping solution. Pour it in a bucket using cool tap water. Do not use hot water as they will loosen the adhesives of the tiles causing the solution to dry up fast.

8. With a mop, spread the solution on the floor keeping the edges well soaked. Remember that most build up are formed at these areas.

9. Let the solution stand for at least four to five minutes before using the stripping machine.

10. Remove the dirty solution immediately using a dry mop or a dry/wet vacuum. Make sure that the solution will not dry up.

11. Rinse the area thoroughly with a clean wet mop. Add a commercial neutralizer or use the vinegar solution to allow better bonding of the new finish.

12. Allow the floor to dry. If there are areas that needs re-stripping, then do so.

13. Make sure that you air dry the floor for at least an hour before you apply a new wax or finish.

Stripping floors may seem easy enough. But you really need practice to hone out your skills. If you do not have the time and the skill to perform the procedure, better ask assistance from a professional floor care specialist.
