Wedding during the spring and summer months allows the bride to incorporate colorful flower beds, flowering trees, and rose gardens as part of her wedding theme. About the only downside to a garden wedding are the potential problems weather can create. Bridesmaids appreciate garden weddings because their dresses can often be worn again.
Formal Gardens
The curving lawns, clipped topiaries and manicured flower beds of a formal garden lend an air of sophistication to an outdoor setting. The bride can walk down an expanse of beautiful lawn to a tented outdoor area festooned with flowers where the ceremony takes place.
Bridesmaids have fun in an elegant ball gown style long dress in satin. Formal gardens are most often found in private residences. If that's not possible, many hotels have formal gardens as part of their property. Ask the caterer if they're aware of a private mansion that allows their facility to be used for events.
Country Garden
A mad mix of flowers and colors with an overabundance of blooms is the trademark of a country garden. The bride's home or a good friend’s home could easily be transformed into a country garden through annuals from the nursery or big box store, potted plants and bushes. Spring calls for tulips, freesias, daffodils and sweet peas. Summer means larkspur, cosmos, snapdragons and daisies.
Fall is chrysanthemums, coreopsis and sunflowers. Incorporate the colors of the wedding into the landscape or take a cue of what will be blooming during your wedding and use those as the colors. Bridesmaids look lovely in short satin dresses with flower details at the neckline. A rose covered arbor is the perfect place for the ceremony.
Tropical
Take the guests to a tropical jungle with exotic flowers, lush plants and water features. This is one garden that can be created indoors. Orchids in bulk are not necessarily expensive and nothing says tropical more than they do.
Other flowers to consider are cannas with broad often brightly variegated leaves and blossoms that bloom in hot colors; bougainvillea covered with purple, red, hot pink or white bracts; bird of paradise has sword-shaped leaves and flowers that look like the head of a bird in oranges and reds. And of course, gardenias to lend a heavenly perfume to the air. What could be more romantic than a ceremony in front of a waterfall surrounded by bridesmaids dressed in long flowing chiffon dress with a sweetheart neckline and detachable flower pin?
Wild Flowers
A meadow brimming with wild flowers is the ideal setting for a couple that loves the outdoors and plans on spending lots of time there. Of course make sure you have permission to use the meadow before setting up. Other than the natural setting there isn't much more that's needed for décor.
Casual umbrellas provide shade for guests during the ceremony and can be moved easily to shade tables during the reception. Place informal bunches of flowers on tables festooned with pastel colored table cloths and the decorations are done. Bridesmaids will fit right in with short flowing dresses in crinkle chiffon.
Woodland Glen
Cool, green and calming -- that's what's found in a woodland glen. Larger homes often have acreage that incorporate natural woods into the landscaping. A national, state park, or city would be a lovely setting for a woodland wedding, just make sure all required permits have been acquired for the bridal party and guests.
Outfit the bridesmaids in cool uncluttered short cotton strapless dresses. Some parks restrict the usage of fire and that includes candles, others do not allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Additional decoration could be a flowered arch for the ceremony. Use bouquets to line the aisle and baskets of flowers on the tables.
Garden in Winter
Only the very hardy would attempt to have a garden wedding in the winter. However, a winter fairyland can be created inside through the use of potted evergreens, twinkle lights and white flowers. Transform the room with white roses, orchids, gerbera daisies, statice, larkspur and Asiatic lilies.
Add branches sprayed with artificial snow or iridescent glitter. Wrap the tables in white tablecloths swathed in white netting. Mirrors under the table floral arrangements set with clear votive candle holders and white candles add to the magic. The bridesmaids will be stunning in Grecian style dresses in black with contrasting belt in white flowers.
