Google recently announced its latest Google Labs experiment, Google Fast Flip which aims to deliver a reading experience similar to that of flicking through the pages of a traditional newspaper or magazine. This is an attempt to smooth over relations between Google and the newspaper industry which has openly criticized the search engine giant.
Publishers contend that Google discourages readers from accessing an entire story as the news snippets and headlines published on the search engine are enough to give the readers a picture of what a story is about. And for most readers, the information gathered from the snippets is enough so that the complete story doesn’t get enough exposure.
Features
Reading news online is often problematic especially in websites that contain a substantial amount of graphics and other media. Fast Flip solves this problem by providing Internet users with a speedy way of reading through news items. Users can flip through a collection of the latest news items and other popular stories without having to deal with delays in loading. You can keep clicking through the articles until you find something of interest. Feeds from top publishers may also be seen on the website.
Fast Flip also keeps track of your viewing history so that it suggests topics, content and even journalists that you often like to read about. There is a “Like” button that appears on the page so you can mark your favorite stories. The “E-mail” button allows users to share content and exchange recommendations with their online communities so people who often make use of social networking sites should also find this innovation convenient.
There is also Fast Flip for mobile devices that make use of Google’s Android operating system. It is also available on the Apple iPhone. Tactile page flipping is featured for the mobile version where you swipe to the left or right to flip between articles. The zoom feature also enables higher resolution viewing and tapping on an article displays details about the story.
Partners
For this project, Google has partnered with three dozen top publishers and some of these are heavyweights in the industry which should lend considerable credibility to the project. Included in the lineup of publishers are the New York Times, the Washington Post, Newsweek, the Atlantic, Fast Company, ProPublica and Salon.
There is no word on whether or not Google plans to add more publishers into the lineup.
What it Means
Google believes that this project is an effective solution to some of the problems hounding the publishing industry today. An improved, faster way of reading news will encourage users to read more. This gives publishers the opportunity to attract new readers, possibly increase their exposure to existing ones. Likewise, there is a revenue-generating feature where publishers earn a portion of the money made from contextually relevant advertisements.
Some watchers say that Fast Flip could also be disadvantageous to publishers as this would mean allowing Google to access more of their content. Should the reader feel that he has gotten a general idea of what a story is about, reading behavior might not necessarily result in a click-through.
