Wine glasses, used for centuries as vessels for drinking wine, comes in a multitude of dimensions and forms. Some wine glasses are specifically made for red wines, whilst others are more appropriate for whites. To educate oneself on which glasses are suitable for which wines is not as difficult as it looks. Here are some tips to get you started.

First of all, select your wines. When you decide which wines you prefer, then comes the choice of vessels the drink should be housed in.

If your selection comprises a red wine, choose wine glasses with wider bowls. An expansive bowl is intended for the drinker to gently churn the red wine to release its bouquet and color. Red wines are more complex in nature, and a good wine glass allows the drink to aerate whilst letting loose the essence.

If white wine is your preferred choice, then pick wine glasses with longer stems and narrow bodies. Red wines are drunk at room temperature, while white wines must be chilled accordingly. Luke warm white wine not only tastes horrible, but is considered an affront to your guests. The narrow bowl of a white wine glass makes allowances for the drink to stay chilled for longer periods of time. A white wine glass must be held at the stem, so you will not affect the taste through heat transference.

For sparkling wines or champagne, choose a good champagne flute. Like its namesake the champagne flute is slender, statuesque, and used primarily for carbonated wine such as champagne or cava. The tapered pinnacle of a champagne flute thwarts champagne bubbles from dissipating too quickly, plus, the slender body lets you enjoy watching as the bubbles float gently to the surface.

Wine glasses are usually designed elegantly and are delicate and fragile. Most wine vessels possess a timeless quality and associated with refinement and class. We use them when entertaining guests and during our own meal times. Wine glasses are easy to clean and store. Just remember to rinse them thoroughly using very mild detergent in lukewarm water. They should be thoroughly aerated before storing.

If you have a set of favorite wine glasses and find that one or two are slightly chipped, do not despair. There is an easy way to swiftly rectify this, restoring your wine glass to its former pristine condition.

Supplies required: -

- 3 types of sandpaper (320, 400 and 600 grit)

- Clean cloth

- Silver polish

- Gloves to protect your hands

- Goggles (just in case you get 'attacked' by glass and sandpaper debris)

- Tape

- Pencil

Method

- Wash and aerate wine glass

- Incise a minute piece of 320 grit sandpaper and swathe around the eraser end of pencil. To hold it in place, use some tape.

- After protecting yourself with gloves and goggles, proceed to sand the chipped rim component. The whole chipped segment should be sand.

- Replace the 320 grit with the 400 version around the same pencil and repeat method.

- Once again, switch to the 600 grit sandpaper and sand the chipped section thoroughly for one final time.

- Using the clean piece of cloth, wipe away any debris.

- Place a little silver polish and gently buff up the affected area until the rim is once again flawless.
