When people think of fire performers two things generally spring to mind: fire eaters and fire breathers. These are the most commonly sought after for things like wedding and corporate events but are, ironically, two of the least exciting types of fire performance available – and also two of the easiest to learn! Here then is a list of five different types of fire performance (other than fire breathing and fire eating) and what each involves.
When people think of fire performers two things generally spring to mind: fire eaters and fire breathers. These are the most commonly sought after for things like wedding and corporate events but are, ironically, two of the least exciting types of fire performance available – and also two of the easiest to learn!

Here then is a list of five different types of fire performance (other than fire breathing and fire eating) and what each involves:

Fire Juggling:

Fire juggling is the art of; you guessed it, juggling three or more flaming props. Generally juggling clubs are used (essentially a weighted handle with a Kevlar wick on the end). These are then skilfully spun by the juggler and (hopefully) caught only on the handle. Fire juggling balls are also occasionally seen but are less common due to the difficulty in using them. Fire juggling is a classic choice for any event.

Fire Poi:

Fire poi consists of spinning two ropes or chains with Kevlar wicks on the end in order to create patterns and shapes in the air. It has gained a lot of popularity over the last couple decades due the mesmerising effect it can have. Styles differ greatly – some performers choose a very fast style of spinning while others prefer a slower style – using stalls and isolations.

Fire Staff:

Fire staff involves spinning one or more sticks with a wick at each end. There are a huge variety of styles of fire staff spinning from “contact staff”, which involves rolling a long heavy staff around the body with minimal use of the hands, to “staff juggling”, which involves throws and catches of generally two or more staffs. A third family of staff spinning is “isolation staff spinning”. This involves isolating one of the wicks so that it doesn’t move whilst the other one carries on its movement. This is particularly effective in fire shows with two or more performers on stage.

Fire Hoop:

Increasingly a popular art form, fire hoop is essentially hula-hooping, but on fire. Generally a hoop is covered in 5 or 6 flaming wicks and spun round the body by the performer. Many professional fire performers will spin two or more hoops simultaneously.

Fire Fans:

Fire fans offer an impressive site to behold – each “fan” generally consists of a fanned set of wicks (sometimes 10 or more!) and each performer will generally use two. Fans are excellent for group fire shows as together the many wicks create an awesome site on stage.

So next time you are looking to hire a fire eater or a fire breather consider the full range of skills that are available.
