Tarot is a deck of seventy-eight cards that have been used for centuries as a divination tool. The deck divides into four suits of fourteen cards each plus twenty-two individual cards referred to as the major arcane. Each card in the deck has a meaning and keyword attached to it and can be interpreted in a number of ways depending on where it lands in the reading and the other cards that surround it.

The Major Arcana cards are regarded as being the big player sin the pack and a reading is considered to be more set in stone if a high number of the Major Arcana appears during the reading. Although all cards have an important part to play some are universally agreed to be extremely important whenever they appear. Here are five of the most influential Tarot cards:

1. The Fool -The fool is usually numbered zero and is considered to be the ultimate trump card. The appearance of The Fool in any Tarot reading is considered to speak volumes about the individual whose reading it is and rarely refers to anyone around or related to that person, it is a very personal card. The Fool symbolises inexperience and risk taking as well as things like freedom, naivety and lack of ties.

2. Wheel of Fortune - Number Ten in the deck. The fortune card can be equally positive or negative no matter where it lands. Fortune does not always indicate financial or material gain and is more likely to have a more symbolic influence. Fortune is linked strongly with Karma and the idea that 'what goes around comes around'.

3. Judgement - Card number twenty. Judgement is almost always a positive card whether it lands upright or inverted. In Tarot, Judgement is affiliated with words like hope, renewal, redemption and absolution. Judgement will sometimes show itself when someone is coming close to getting an answer that they have been looking for.

4. The Moon - The Moon is card number eighteen in the Tarot pack. The appearance of The Moon during a Tarot reading is usually considered to be negative whenever it is drawn. The Moon relates to feelings of anxiety, to confusion and self-doubt. It can also mean illusion and fear of unknown circumstances. When The Moon has certain other cards around it, it can mean that a solution to the problem is not far away.

5. Death - Number unlucky 13. Death is usually not as negative as many expect it to be. The Death card is very symbolic and rarely indicates an actual death. Death is more likely to be of a phase in someone's life. What comes from death of something old though, is new beginnings and in these terms the Death card can point towards a brighter future and the start of something fresh.

All cards in the Tarot deck can be open to interpretation depending on where they land in the spread, which way up they land and the cards that they are surrounded by. Although anyone can learn the meaning of individual cars, it takes a skilled Tarot reader to give an absolute reading that takes all possibilities into consideration.
