If you get to know a handful of high-quality IT firms, you'll find that a surprisingly high percentage of us don't do a whole lot of marketing. The truth is, we don't always need to – sometimes our competitors do it for us.
There are a lot of business owners and executives out there who are overwhelmingly frustrated with their current IT company, and with good reason. But that doesn't mean your relationship with your outsourced technology support team has to be the same way. Here are five good reasons to switch IT providers and look for someone better:
You're getting too familiar with downtime. This is a huge complaint, and one of the most important. Unscheduled downtime – for your company's website, or your server, as an example – represents an enormous loss of money when you consider that your company can quickly come to a halt. If your employees aren't doing their jobs, and customers can't reach you, then it's a big expense… and one that your IT provider should be doing something about.
Your technology team isn't solving problems proactively. In the same way, having a lot of technology problems to deal with in the first place can be a sign that your IT provider isn't diagnosing issues in advance as well as they should be. At the very least, if they can't solve an issue without further input or funding from you, they should be able to make you aware of some potential problems beforehand.
Your IT provider isn't keeping up with your technology. Have you changed hardware software systems recently? And if so, is your IT provider fluent with your new technology? If not, then it could be a sign that they aren't willing to do the hard work needed to keep your company running as smoothly as it could be.
You get the sense that you're paying for more than you're getting. Obviously, this is a bit subjective. If you're paying rock-bottom prices, or if your IT provider has repeatedly advised that you upgrade your hardware because it keeps failing, then the fault may not lie with them. Still, most business owners have a sense of when they aren't getting their money's worth, and you should at least ask enough questions to have an idea of what sort of value you're getting for your IT expenses.
You, or your staff, are doing a lot of the IT work yourself. This sounds obvious, but it's not uncommon to find an office where the company' paying an outside team for IT support, despite the fact that they're dealing with most smaller problems themselves. If your IT provider isn't responsive or concerned enough to handle most or all of your technology issues, it's probably time to make a switch.
Sometimes, it's hard to decide whether you really need a new IT provider not. If you are dealing with one of these situations, however, make the easy choice and find a technology provider that will take better care of your account.
