If you have ever thought about attending film school, but find yourself on the fence about whether or not to actually go through with it, here are five solid reasons you should bite the bullet and earn a film degree.

Technical Instruction

Filming anything requires a great deal of know how. You are not simply born with knowledge of how to be a continuity editor or a cinematographer. There is equipment to use, techniques to understand and terminology to learn. You may be able to pick up some of this on your own, but a formal education from professionals can help you learn these things correctly. Not only that, but a structured, formal film school education can teach you these fundamentals much more quickly than if you struggled on your own.

Feedback

Showing your films to your parents and friends is nice, but can you really trust the feedback they give you will be honest and constructive? When you attend film school, you could be completing projects of all sizes. You can get honest, constructive feedback from your peers and your instructors on everything from your ideas to your technique to your finished product. This feedback can help you improve and is an invaluable piece of your education and no price tag can be put on the opportunity to share ideas. Additionally, you can learn from the successes and mistakes of your fellow classmates.

Professional Mentors

Just as your peers and instructors can provide you with feedback, they can also provide you with solid guidance. Setting out on your own to make movies in your backyard with friends may be fun, but you won't have anyone to push you to the next level. A mentor can teach you and push you to do the best work you possibly can.

Networking and Connections

The instructors and peers found at film schools can become part of students' social and professional networks. Staying in contact with them after you receive your film degree can be an excellent idea, as they may be able to collaborate with you on future projects both personal and professional. It is also a good idea to get involved in alumni and professional organizations while enrolled in and after moving on from film school. The contacts you make can become invaluable as you move through your career.
