Perhaps the floor that faces the greatest amount of use in your home is the floor in your kitchen. In order to make the right decision about the type of flooring that you should install in your kitchen, you need to think not only about appearance, but about practicality as well.
When deciding on the type of floor that you want to install, the first thing that you should consider is the type of kitchen that you have. If your kitchen is going to be used a great deal, you will need to approach things differently than if you were to be using it somewhat rarely. You will also need to consider if the kitchen will be used for commercial purposes, for use in the home, or for gourmet purposes.
Flooring types for use in the home include tile, wood, linoleum, cork, carpet, bamboo, and concrete, among others. Each of these options has their own pros and cons. Carpet, of course, is an option that can be ruled out immediately. The amount of food that falls on the floor, the number of spills that occur, and the number crumbs that accumulate should make it clear that carpet in the kitchen would be a terrible choice. It is prone to stains, damage from moisture, and it requires routine cleaning even when it is not in the kitchen. All of these facts make carpet a terrible choice for use in the kitchen. Similarly, cork has many of the same faults. This is especially true with regard to moisture, which easily damages cork.
It is important to choose a floor that is easy to clean for use in the kitchen. Options that fit these criteria include linoleum, hardwood floors, tile, and bamboo. They are easily swept up and mopped. This makes them much simpler to keep clean.
Wood and bamboo are two choices that are often selected because of their attractive appearance. They look more natural than some of the other flooring options, and since they have a hard, smooth surface they are fairly easy to keep clean. They can be more susceptible to stains than some of the other options, especially with powerful stains such as those caused by wine. In most cases this is not a problem if the spill is cleaned up quickly, although this also depends on the quality of the material. Since wood and bamboo floors are more likely to show damages due to wear over time, place a mat on the areas of high traffic for additional protection.
The best options for use in the kitchen floor are tile and linoleum. These are built to resist spills far more effectively than any other flooring option currently available. These floors rarely wear down over time and are very easy to clean. The quality of each flooring material will determine how well it will look over time. In most cases tile and linoleum will look better for a longer period of time than any of the other flooring option. The biggest differences between linoleum and tile are the price and aesthetics. Linoleum is a much cheaper option. A tile floor is considered more impressive, although it terms of practicality it doesn't really offer anything that a linoleum floor does not. Tile floors can come in many different prices, depending on the quality of the stone, but it is usually more expensive than linoleum.
