When accessing websites, domain names such as example.com are used to indicate which specific site is wanted. However, in order to figure out how to reach these websites, a computer must convert the name, or web address, to a number, called an IP address. DNS, which stands for Domain Name System, is how the translation from name to number is achieved.
Computers that translate names to numbers are called DNS servers. However, most DNS servers don't actually know which numbers are associated with which names. Instead, they must query another DNS server for the requested web address. When a computer is trying to figure out what IP address is associated with example.com, it asks its local DNS server, which is probably run by the local internet service provider. The local DNS server then contacts the DNS server that is associated with example.com. Because this DNS server knows the IP address for example.com, it is called an authoritative DNS server for example.com.
Every working web address has at least one authoritative DNS server. Without such a server, no computer would ever be able to contact the site because its IP address would never be found. In fact, most web addresses are associated with multiple DNS servers. This is so that if one of the servers crashes or otherwise becomes unable to respond to requests, other servers will be able to complete the work, preventing interruption of the site.
Some DNS servers are not authoritative. They exist only to ask the authoritative DNS servers to translate names to IP addresses. Sometimes people run these DNS servers on their home computers if they have trouble with their service provider's DNS server. On the other side of the coin, there also exist DNS servers that are authoritative-only. These servers respond only to requests for web addresses whose IP addresses they know, and they reject any other requests. In the middle are the DNS servers that are authoritative for some addresses, but will respond to other requests as well.
When they are working, DNS servers are an invisible, but very crucial part of the Internet. Without authoritative DNS servers, websites would not be accessible except by their IP addresses, which are much harder to remember than names are.
