If you're thinking of consulting a chiropractor, but aren't sure of your next step, read on. Here you'll find information you need to know about chiropractic, what problems it can remedy, and the benefits you get from it.

Background And History

Chiropractic is a branch of health care that deals with wellness through treatment of the muscular and skeletal system, with particular importance to the spine. The system was developed by a healer named David Palmer, based in Iowa. It originated in 1895, and has since then developed in several ways, incorporating many of the diagnostic and care techniques discovered by modern science.

The basic principle of this system of health care is that the human body's functioning and equilibrium depends vitally on the central nervous system. Any disturbance to the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord, can affect a person's general well-being.

Such disturbance or interference to the central nervous system can be caused by misaligned bones or joints that twist or stretch nerves out of place. Such misalignment, especially of vertebrae, can impede proper functioning of the nerves.

Manipulating and correcting the alignment of vertebrae or other joints in the body can allow the nerves to return to normal functioning. This in turn will allow the body to regain its optimal equilibrium and health. This process avoids the use of medication, drugs and surgery. This helps people avoid ingesting harmful pharmaceuticals and thereby precludes the possibility of the long term side-effects of drugs.

What Ailments Can A Chiropractor Treat?

Several! Most people have the impression that chiropractors can only give spine treatment for back pain and joint aches. This is something they most definitely can do, but many other ailments can also be remedied and even prevented.

As explained in the previous section, this system is all about helping the body to heal itself just by removing interference to the nervous system. A lot of ailments such as headaches, joint pains in the upper and lower limbs and shoulders, as well as fybromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome, may be remedied by spinal decompression.

How Qualified Are Chiropractors?

They are highly trained and qualified professionals. Becoming a licensed practitioner in the U.S., involves quite a rigorous and challenging training program. Their training is comparable to what other health care professionals such as physiotherapists and paramedics undergo.

A student generally has to have an undergraduate background in biology. After obtaining such a suitable bachelor's degree, students have to successfully go through a 4 to 5 year training program. One such program is held at a specialized college, such as the Utah College of Massage Therapy. The course of study at such colleges includes anatomy, biochemistry, pathology, physiology, orthopedics, and much more.

In addition of course, students also study their specialized chiropractor subjects. Towards the end of the program, students have to successfully complete an internship program with their college's clinic. Such colleges in the U.S. need to be accredited by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
