Find Your Own Learning Style Before Creating a Good Study Environment

You have a lot of things to do. You have a study plan to work on. Or maybe you are a student, working for the coming examination. But when you sit at your desk, you find you just cannot focus, and inefficiency.

Having a plan is good for people to make clear what goals they are going to get, and more easily to get focus on what they are doing. You have effective time management (a good plan in advance), high motivation, good reading and not taking skills and systematic test preparation, but if you can combine all these advantages with your outside environment, and create a good study environment, will make your study much more efficient, and you are more likely to enjoy studying.

However, how to create a good study environment? Is your bedroom or classroom good enough? What is “a good study environment” referring to?

Actually, a good study environment is a highly individualized matter. What’s right for you may not be right for your friend or roommate. If possible, you should designate a special place to study, which should provide few distractions to allow for maximum concentration. For example, I like study in the library rather than in classroom when I was at school working for the final exam. I find myself concentrate there and the availability of learning resources are abundant. But one of my friends likes working in the restaurant. She thinks she can talk to people there, and enjoy the delicious food there.

So, deciding your most effective and efficient learning style will help you designate what kind of place good for your study. There are different choices for different nature of the learning task. For example, if your learning task is discussing, library should not be a good place. If you need to do some experiments, a laboratory should be good.

To determine your learning style, you have to pay attention to your sense while studying there. Eliminate things that may interfere with your concentration, and utilize your senses to accommodate learning. If you have much stricter demands for the task, you can take the following aspects into account.

Hearing. What level and what kind of noise can you tolerate? Do you work best in total silence or with a low to moderate noise level? You may be able to concentrate rather well with a jack hammer right outside your window, but a leaky faucet may be intolerable! As a general rule, quieter is better, but listen and decide for yourself.

Sight. Adequate lighting is a must, and the direction and intensity of the lighting are important factors. Poor lighting is a chief cause of eyestrain and headaches among college students, and improper lighting also leads to fatigue. Coverage of study materials should be even with no shadows or glare. Shielded full-spectrum fluorescents may cause you to be calmer, steadier, and less easily distracted. Another "sight" consideration is the level of movement in your study area. Studying near a major traffic path can lead to distractions in watching the passing scenery.

Touch. Your environment should be comfortable but not too comfortable. Slight amounts of muscular tension have been found to increase efficiency and accuracy in mental work. A chair which promotes good posture is a better choice than a recliner or waterbed.

Taste and smell. Beware of appealing aromas in the immediate vicinity of your study environment. Such distractions, though pleasant, may interfere with concentration. A move to another area might allow for more efficient use of time.

Study environment is not necessarily the only aspect in influencing your learning, but it is really an essential one. Have a try and adjust your environment to your learning style.
