Women’s fragrances are big business which is why celebrities such as X Factor’s Tulisa launch their own perfumes. Although female perfumes are aimed at men, in terms of adding to a woman’s allure, almost invariably it is women who decide on which perfume to buy.

Notes for a perfect harmony
Describing a perfume’s smell is not easy; it’s the same problem that wine tasters have. In many ways, describing a perfume, “its notes” is much more of a copy writing problem than one to do with the nose which is why in department stores perfumes are liberally sprayed on the skin of potential customers so that a perfume’s bouquet can work with the recipient’s skin rather than relying on words spun by a copywriter.
Christmas is almost upon us and many men will be frantically rifling through their girlfriend’s or partner’s cosmetics to find names of women's fragrances that they have bought before. It’s often at this time of year that celebrities hope to cash in on their fame by associating their name with the launch of a new perfume. For example, a name made famous by X Factor is Stacey Solomon whose perfume is called ‘Smile’. Smiling is definitely what Stacey Solomon is doing now that she has just become engaged to be married. A few weeks ago Tulisa Contostavlos, an X Factor judge and singer with the group N-Dubz, added to the wide range of womens perfumes on the market this Christmas by putting her name to TFB by Tulisa. It is rumoured that the tattoo on Tulisa’s arm that she proudly shows at the beginning of every X Factor programme is an advertisement for “The Female Boss by Tulisa”.
For retailers looking for a wholesale distributor that can deliver in time for Christmas, there are a few that hold almost every renowned perfume imaginable in stock, which can amount to over two thousand brands. There are some brands of female perfumes that are always popular and are often advertised on TV such as such as Chanel, which was promoted in a mini movie by Nicole Kidman and later by the French film star, Audrey Tautou; the latest Chanel commercials feature Britain’s top young actress, Kiera Knightley. In its entirety, the commercial, directed by Joe Wright who directed Knightley in ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and ‘Atonement’, is over three minutes long and features the singing of Joss Stone. Kiera Knightley portrays Chanel as being chic, youthful, graceful, beautiful, sexy and just a little bit ballsy. In other words, in the battle for female fragrances, Kiera Knightleys Chanel persona epitomises the dream of every woman, whatever her age.
Female perfumes
For centuries, men and women have been using exquisite smells to attract each other and, in some cases, to disguise other, less pleasant aromas. But, in the world of womens fragrances, choice is more about the brand and in people recognising quality through the effectiveness of a brand’s bouquet. Price is a key element as no woman wants to wear a perfume that is not very expensive.
Women wear branded clothes, shoes and watches and they also like to wear branded perfumes whether it is Jo Malone, Estee Lauder, Gucci, Stella, Prada, Nina Ricci or Chanel or TFB by Tulisa or Smile by Stacey Solomon. The choice is amazing as is often the price.
