Feather boas have been in and out of fashion as often as burlesque, but birds’ feathers for all occasions, whether for boas or bouquets of flowers, have never been more popular.

Boas never constrict when made with feathers
Few women and even fewer men have enjoyed the unique pleasure of wrapping feather boas around their necks and experiencing the gently kiss of the feathers. Ostrich feather boas are probably considered the king of boas as they are made with plumes taken from the planet’s biggest bird. These incredibly fluffy boas are for making a statement which is why they are so popular with Las Vegas-style showgirls and burlesque dancers. Even from the back of a theatre, boas made with ostrich plumage look truly impressive.
A turkey feather boa is heavier than boas made from ostrich plumage as more feathers are used to weave into the boa to create the incredible effect. It should be made clear that before any bird plumage is used, the down and other parts of the plumage are washed and dyed to create a brightly coloured boa that is delicate to the touch but also robust in construction.
However, bleaches and dyes are not always used to create boas as some of nature’s natural patterns and shades make for exquisite boa designs. For example, plumage from the marabou bird makes for boas that are ultra thin and ultra fluffy.
Other birds that make for good boas include geese, coque and birds of paradise. Today, birds of paradise are protected, internationally, and so there is a very good market in fake birds of paradise boas, which usually look and feel just like the real thing.
Fortunately for ostriches in the wild, ostriches are also bred and farmed and provide a very good source of meat, leather and plumage. An ostrich fringe of plumes is used by many costume designers in the theatre and also by milliners and fashion designers who see the bird’s plumage as providing the perfect adornment.
Birds feathers whether it is the plumes for flight (not in the case of the ostrich, emu or kiwi) or down plumes for warmth, there is much to admire about the wonderful engineering of the feather that make it such a pleasure to touch and so useful for warmth. Feather boas have been around for at least two hundred years and although they have a risqué reputation thanks to the use of the boa in burlesque, the boa is definitely a popular item today and provides a similar level of warmth and glamour that fur used to before killing animals solely for their skin became suitably unfashionable.
It is possible to buy a wide variety of fake boas but if you wish to experience the genuinely soft, unique and flattering qualities of a boa made with the plumage of beautiful birds, then you should definitely shop around. Unlike some furs, no plumage is taken from birds that are endangered.
