LACOSTE IS COMING to SoHo – in search of its newest audience, the young and the fashionable shoppers whose parents sported the alligator back when Richard Nixon was president.
That’s when Lacoste Women Polo was the favorite shirt of preppies and tennis players, who wore its tiny logos over their hearts.
Lacoste has picked out a 1,500-square-foot storefront at 130 Prince St., where it plans to open for business next spring.
It will be the third stand-alone Manhattan store for Lacoste Men Polo, whose clothes are also sold at department stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. The new shop will share the block with French Connection, Coach and Baby Phat – also magnets for the young.
Numerous prospective tenants competed for the Prince Street location, whose rent is $200 per square foot. Such demand is a sign of the resurgence of the downtown shopping district – which languished after Sept. 11.

An East Village church threatened with eviction – by another church, no less – got a temporary restraining order allowing it to stay at 9 E. 7th St. while the two duke it out in State Supreme Court.
Pastor Rick Del Rio’s Abounding Grace Ministries had been told to clear out of the landmarked building by Halloween, as the Daily News first revealed. Its landlord is Union, N.J.-based Ukrainian Evangelical Assemblies of God Church.
The two sides have lots of legal ammunition to use against each other.
When the Ukrainian church bought the building from another congregation, it didn’t get approval from the state attorney general, which is required when church property changes hands. So the church isn’t the legal owner of 9 E. 7th, and doesn’t have the right to evict Pastor Rick’s church, his lawyers argue.
At a hearing yesterday, Judge Diane Lebedeff told them to get someone from the attorney general’s office to come to her court and explain how to deal with this issue.
The Ukrainian church leveled some charges of its own. Officials said that Abounding Grace constructed a theater for its youth program on the fourth floor of the building – without city permits. The judge ordered Abounding Grace not to use the facility as a theater until architects appear in her court to tell her it’s safe.
She’ll hold another hearing next week.

“SoHo is coming back,” said Faith Hope Consolo of Garrick-Aug Associates Store Leasing, who was landlord Richard Talmadge’s broker in the deal. Steven B. Greenberg of the Greenberg Group represented Lacoste.
Lacoste’s new location is occupied by designer Nicole Miller, whose lease is expiring.
CHURCH VS. CHURCH
