The low uptake of family travel insurance has been on many occasions attributed to the negative perceptions and experiences these people have had with their insurance companies in the past and the now hackneyed idea that insurance companies offering to insure them against just every possible risk are actually looking to fleece them of their money.
Travel insurance is also a hard sell to the public because it is not mandatory to have like car, property, business or health insurance. For example a 2011 survey by the British Broadcasting Corporation established that only one third of the total adults who were surveyed had bought any form of travel insurance when they went on vacation abroad. The study also found that many of them did not see the need to buy travel insurance because they had never been in a situation that required by insurance during the course of their trips.
However, since the losses that have been witnessed by the Asian Tsunami, The Haitian earthquake, the kidnappings of foreign nationals in politically unstable countries such as Somalia and Hurricanes such as Katrina, the travel insurance industry has witnessed some significant growth. This is because more and more travelers are realizing the real benefits in buying travel insurance for themselves and their families. The insurance guarantees them with something to fall back on in case they meet the above misfortunes.
Travel insurance comes in two forms or policies. These are the single trip travel insurance and multi trip travel insurance. The single trip travel insurance is usually purchased at the moment of booking for a trip and is meant to cover the possible risks only for the duration of the trip. The multi trip travel insurance is meant to cover an unlimited number of trips over a specified time and it is usually a long term contract between the insured and the insurer.
Many travel agencies nowadays insist on only taking clients with some form of travel insurance because they have been in the travel business for long and know the risks associated with travelling to vacation destinations. This is usually for the benefit of both the travel agencies and their clients because it is the insurance companies that will pay the costs when travel risks such as accidents, kidnappings, ransom payment, trip cancellation and loss of lives occur.
Governments are also encouraging their citizens to ensure that they have travel insurance before they depart for their holidaying destinations. This is because the embassies of these countries have witnessed what happens to their citizens when they go for their trips and lose their luggage or they are forced to dip into their pockets to pay for missed and cancelled flight or for cases where they are personally liable.
