The beautiful Outer Banks are a favorite summer destination. The Outer Banks draws vacationers from all over the country. The unspoiled sand dunes have been giving travellers incredible memories of Outer Banks beach vacations for generations. The gorgeous beaches are arguably the biggest draw in the summer months. But they are by no means the only reason to cross the sound and summer is certainly not the only season to visit.

Fall in the Outer Banks has so much to offer. The summer crowds are gone and the pace of the Outer Banks slows from relaxing to downright leisurely. You’ll be able to enjoy all the best attractions without lines or long waits. The weather is still warm but the temperature is more mild and perfect for outdoor activities like beach combing, biking and fishing. The fishing season is just getting underway in the early autumn. Of course, prices and availability for rental accommodations are at their best in the off season.

There are some really wonderful attractions to visit in the Outer Banks. They can be incorporated as educational opportunities for homeschooling families or savored as a romantic couple’s outing. Lighthouses are one of the Outer Banks all-time favorite attractions and Corolla has a beautiful example in the red brick beauty of the Currituck Light. The Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills is another excellent choice for a fall visit. The Outer Banks History Center will give visitors an excellent overview of the long and storied history of the area.

In the later part of the year, you’ll have far less company at these attractions that you would in the high season. Lines will be short or non-existent. These same will hold true at popular restaurants and shops. You’ll have more of the Outer Banks to yourself in the fall.

The fall weather will make seeing these attractions, many of which are outdoors, even more fun. The temperatures will still be warm but it will have lost much of that summer sizzle. You’ll still need your sunblock but you might need a light jacket for the evenings, too. Autumn breezes off the ocean will make your outdoor activities comfortable.

Many of our outdoor activities are at their peak in the autumn. Biking and golf are natural choices for this active season. It’s not too late to jump in and learn how to windsurf, though you should probably wear a wetsuit. Fishing doesn’t get much better than fall in the Outer Banks.

Fishing in the fall is an angler’s dream. Many of the beaches on the Outer Banks will be lined with trucks in the mornings, each one sporting a rack of fishing rods and a cooler for the day’s catch. Striped bass migrate along the coast in the spring and fall and they make an exceptional meal. Lucky anglers might be able to fight an aggressive blue fish to the shore in the fall, too. If surf casting isn’t your favorite, Kitty Hawk also has a public pier.

Taking advantage of all the Outer Banks has to offer is more affordable in the autumn. Rates are typically lower and the best rental homes have better availability in this season. You can have a first rate getaway at a bargains hunter’s price.

The best way to find out what fall in the Outer Banks has to offer is to come and see for yourself. You might just find a new favorite season.
