This article informs us about hip replacement and how an orthopedic surgeon helps in complete recovery after the surgery.
Today the number of people with problem in hip joint has increased to a considerable extent. People have to suffer with constant pain and decreased mobility due to deteriorating hip joint. As a result they do not have any personal and social life. Problematic hip joint restricts people from all those things which they used to easily. In order to get rid of this pain one has to undergo a Hip Replacement surgery. Hip replacement is a very common surgery these days and mostly all cases are successful.

For total Hip Replacement surgery the most important factors to be considered is the age of the patient and the condition of the hip so that best possible solution can be offered to the patient for his problem. There are two ways in which the surgery can be done. They are:

1.Traditional approach (posterior approach)
2.Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System (anterior approach)

In traditional approach, an incision (about 8 to 12 inches long) is made down on the outer side of your hip. The ball at the upper end of your thigh bone (femur) is cut and a ball or metal stem component is replaced in its place. The stem is placed into the marrow cavity of the femur and the ball portion is fitted into a new ceramic or plastic socket that is implanted into your pelvis. In the anterior approach the incision is made along the front of the hip which provides a more direct route to the hip joint. This area does not have major hip muscles therefore tissue or muscle damage is least in this approach. However, the traditional approach is most commonly in use because there are very few surgeons who perform Hip Replacement through anterior approach and above all it requires special surgical table and special surgical training.

In order to get fully recovered after the hip replacement surgery it is important for the patient to follow the instructions given by his or her Orthopedic Surgeon. While recovering from this surgery the patient has to undergo physical therapy so as to get back the strength and functionality. Many patients use a walker, a cane or crutches during the first four to eight weeks after the surgery. However, a patient can expect to return to his normal lifestyle three to six months if he or she acts according to the suggestions recommended by the Orthopedic Surgeon. The patient must be very careful and take precautions during the first twelve weeks of recovery in order to avoid compromises. Avoid aggressive activities like stair climbing, be careful while getting up to a standing position or getting in or out of the car, above all avoid excessive movement of your hip. An exercise program which includes general conditioning of your leg is usually recommended by the Orthopedic Surgeon.

Hip Replacement surgery is of immense value to those suffering from hip joint problem. It ensures immediate and long lasting relief from intolerable pain. However, in order to get fully recovered the patient must listen to the Orthopedic Surgeon to avoid any future problem.
