Oftentimes people will say that they are interested in creating some video to promote their business and ask, "How much would it cost?" Imagine walking into a restaurant and asking, "How much will it cost us to eat here?"
Oftentimes people will say that they are interested in creating some video to promote their business and ask, "How much would it cost?" Imagine walking into a restaurant and asking, "How much will it cost us to eat here?" Well, how many people are in your party? What will you order? Will you be drinking alcohol? What kind? How much? Will you be ordering dessert or appetizers?

There are so many factors that affect the cost of "some video" that it's impossible to give an estimate without knowing at least some of the particulars of the job. A videographer could quote a range of $300 to $2,000, but that's not very helpful. Factors that affect the cost of the project include:

Purpose – what do you want the video to accomplish? Why do you want to do a video?

Size – are you looking for a single 3 minute video, or a series of 6? Or are you interested in having a 1 hour presentation recorded and presented in its entirety?

Script – Will this be a testimonial, unscripted video or will it be a scripted piece? How will this script be created?

Narration – Who will narrate the video? Will you want to hire a voiceover professional?

Music – Will there be background music?

Locations – Will the video be shot at a single location or will travel to multiple locations be necessary?

Props – Will special equipment or props be needed, such as products or processes that you want to highlight?

Formatting – Where do you want to present the video? On YouTube or on a DVD? Do you want a longer version and a shorter version? If it's a long video, do you want to break it into multiple parts?

Presentation – If YouTube is being used, is there an existing YouTube channel or does one need to be created? Who will be responsible for posting the video? Who is responsible for writing the title, description and keywords? If the video will be delivered on DVD, what kind of packaging is required? How many copies will you need?

This list is not intended to scare you! If you don't know the answer to all of the items, that's okay. A professional videographer should be willing to help you figure them out.

Here are a couple of tips that can make it easier to address some of these issues:

Find a similar video – if you can point to an existing video and say, "I want one like that," then you’ll have a starting point for comparisons.

Share your budget – If you are unwilling to share your budget, it becomes a guessing game. But if the video producer you want to hire knows how much you have to spend, they can tell you what they can offer for that price. Again, it gives a starting point. Use the tips above to help you create a framework for your project. You’ll be able to get an “apples to apples” proposal and find the best professional videographer for your project.
