"Hair loss after pregnancy, though a major concern for many women, is a common side effect. It is known to affect almost 50% of the women. However, this hair loss, just like the other changes that occur during pregnancy is temporary in nature and there is no real hair loss cure for this. The cycle will return to normal on its own, so women need not worry about it. The frequent time period of excessive hair loss is roughly three to five months following the birth of the child, after which, the cycle gets back to the usual level within six months to one year.
Pregnancy brings about an increase in the level of the hormones progesterone as well as estrogen. This rise in hormones is the reason that keeps away pregnant women from losing hair. Therefore, at the time of pregnancy, larger amounts of hair go into the resting phase, as compared to the hair that would go into the resting phase in a non pregnancy state. Studies reveal that nearly 60% of the growing hair goes into the resting phase during pregnancy. Post delivery the level of the hormones fall and they are at a decreased level, subsequent to which the hair in the resting stage, begin to fall out. It is majorly due to the lower level of estrogen that the hair fall begins. In a non pregnant state, the resting hair fall at an interval of two to three months, and thus new hair grows, but due to pregnancy, this hair falls does not occur. In simple words, the regular hair loss that was postponed due to pregnancy causes this excessive hair loss. Thus, it can be stated that hair loss after pregnancy is due to the hormonal changes in the woman’s body.
Hair loss can be associated with other reproductive health issues, and hair loss may well be caused by anything that calls for an alteration in the level of the estrogen hormone. Several women consume oral contraceptive pills so as to delay pregnancy, and when they wish to get pregnant, they discontinue the pills. This cessation of intake of birth control pills is a major reason for hair loss. Also, discontinuing of any other hormonal sort of birth control technique used to postpone pregnancy causes hair fall. Moreover, miscarriage often leads to loss of hair and so does abortion.
Women need to take care of their diet, in order to have healthier hair, not only during pregnancy, but also post pregnancy. Having a diet rich in vitamins is surely one way to reduce hair loss after pregnancy and is also a natural hair loss cure. Excessive hair loss may be due to deficiency in vitamins or minerals. The vitamins for hair loss reduction include vitamin B complex and vitamin E. Additionally, consumption of Biotin, vitamin C and zinc, among others is very important. It is essential to remember that these vitamins be taken in suitable doses, in consultation with the doctor, as over dose can be harmful.
